ALBERT A. SANBORN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WATERPROOF OELLULOID CUFF AND COLLAR COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PROCESSES OF MANUFACTURING CELL ULOID COLLARS AND CUFFS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221.977, dated November 25, 1879; applicalion filed September 19, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT A. SANBORN, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Processes of Manufacturing Celluloid Collars and Ouifs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to celluloid collars and cuffs having a cloth, metal, or other interlining; and it consists in the improved method the interlining all around a half an inch, more or less; or the interlining may be just the size the article is to be made up, and the face side may be cut so much larger than the lining that the edges will turn over on the back of the interlinin g, as above shown.
The back piece or lining O is of celluloid, and is cut a little larger than the size of the article after the edges have beenturned over. This is now cemented to the interlining and to the turned-over edges of the face of the celluloid, and the excess is trimmed off with a sharp knife. Thus, having the cellriloid edges turned over on the back of the interlining to which the edges of the lining or back are cemented, I get amuch stronger and more perfect edge one that will not separate, as was the liability when the back was cemented to the interlining only and only the edges of the celluloid came together; and I have also a more perfect imitation of a hem, and therefore a more perfect imitation of linen goods; and this process saves the need of stitching down the inter-lining, as Was the order formerly.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In the manufacture of celluloid collars and cuffs, the process, substantially as herein set forth, of uniting the interlinin g with one sheet of the celluloid and turning over the celluloid and lining onto the interlining, making aconiplete covered edge, and then of cementing the back or lining of celluloid to the interlining and to turned-over edges, for the purposes specified.
ALBERT A. SANBORN.
