IMPROVEMENT lN SHIRTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 46, [72, dated January 31, 1865.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABRAHAM WOR'MSER, of

the city and State of New York, have invented,

made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Shirts and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and

shirts have heretofore been made with a plain bosom and a plai'ted or ornamental bo som worn over such plain shirt, said'bosom being buttoned or tied at the neck and at the lower end. In this character of shirts the bosom generally becomes detached'when the shirt is taken ofl, and while in wear is very likely to become rumpled and displaced, because there is nothing to connect the bosom to the shirt at the sides, and the shirt itself, being beneath the bosom, prevents the bosom remaining as smooth as in those shirts where the bosom is made with the shirts.

The nature of my said invention consists in forming a'shirt without any front'or bosom portion, this part being entirely left out, as represented by full and dotted lines in Fig. 1, at a a. The edges of the material around this opening should be hemmed to obtain the requisite strength. The bosom bis made rather larger than this opening, and is to be connected with the shirt at its edges by button and button-holes, as represented at c, or by hooks and eyes, or any other suitable means, so that the said bosom will always remainsmooth and in its place, in the same manner as the bosoms that are made upon the shirts.vv

The bosom is formed with a collar, (1, at its upper edge, which is of a suificien't length to button to the shirt at the back of the neck,

and, if preferred, the bosom maybe divided down the middle part, as at e, and. buttoned together, so that the shirt may be unbuttoned" down the. front for put-ting on or taking ofi' in the usual manner.

This-mode of inaking'shirts and bosoms enablesthe wearer to use two or more clean bosom-s to one clean shirt, and at" the same time the bosom is retained in place, so as to appear as a part of the shirt, because the shirt does not extend across under the bosom;

and the connection at the edges of the bosom to theshirtare sufficient to cause thebosom to lie smoothly.

This mode of construction is also a great convenience in getting the bosom to set prop erly, because -the wearercau try on the shirt and have the buttons sewed on at'suclrpornts" as will best adapt the shirt and bosom to the. persons shape. A
