UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JAMES W. GLADDING AND GEORGE W. HAUXHURST, OF HARTFORD, CONN.
IMPROVEMENT IN POSTAGE-STAMP HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,122, dated March 6, 1877; application filed February 20, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES W. GLADDING and GEORGE 'W. HAUXHURST, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford, and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Postage and Revenue Stamp Holders; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction of a small pocket-box for holding postage or revenue stamps, the peculiarities of which construction will be hereinafter more particularly described.
To enable those skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective of the box opened, and Fig. 2 a perspective of the same when closed.
In the figures, A and B represent two boxes or half-boxes, made of metal, which, when closed together, form a single box for holding postage or revenue stamps. Each of the halves A and B are formed with one end open; but the open end of box B is hinged to the closed end of box A, as seen at G, and when the box B is closed over the box A, the closed end 0 of box B closes the open end of box A, the sides of one box closing over those of the other to form a tight box, as seen in Fig. 2.
The half B may be divided into two compartments, D D, for holding different denominations of stamps, while the half A may be, and will be in this case, large enough to hold the largest size postage or revenue stamps which are used on documents.
The partition F is used when the large-sized boxes are made for holding three denominations of stamps; but when the box is made small, so that it will hold only two kinds of stamps, the partition is removed, and one kind is placed in the upper portion, and the other in the lower portion, of the box.
In each partition of the box is placed a suitable spring, a, with upturned end, for the purpose of bearing on the stamps and holding them in place. The stamps are slipped under the springs, and when required for use may readily be removed by the thumb and finger.
Stamps may be carried in this way in the pockets without fear of adhesion to each other, and then they are always ready for use.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A stamp-holding box composed of the two sections A and B, each for holding stamps, constructed as described, and hinged together and provided with the springs e e, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto signed our names this 6th day of February, in the year of our Lord 1877.
JAMES W. GLADDING. G. W. HAUXHURST. Witnesses:
