HIRAM O. HOLMES, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND LA FOREST W. HALL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN OVERBOSOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 88,015, dated March 6, 1877; application fil ed February 5, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HIRAM O. HOLMES, of Boston, in the county of Snfl'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Overbosom,. Collar, and Suspender-Holder Uombined, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists of an open -front overbosom, or false bosom, with a collar and a suspender-holder, and also an adjustable elastic strap attaching the bosom at its lower part to the waistband, all combined in one piece or garment, as an article of wearingapparel.
Its objcct will be readily understood by an examination of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents the said invention as when in use or upon the person. The bosom, designated A A, is made open in front, and is fastened together in any suitable manner by buttons having the front covered, as seen in Fig. 2, or by studs, or any suitable fastening. The collar B is also made in the ordinary way, having a binding, a, attaching it to the bosom, and which is also of the required width for the neck-tie. D is a strap attachment, connected by an elasti-cband within the fold (not shown in the drawing) to the bottom of the bosom, serving to fasten the bottom to a button on the waistband and the elasticity of the strap attachment will adjust or conform it to any strain upon the bosom. O (J are loops or suspender-holders, and consist of strips of cloth or any suitable material, under which pass the suspenders, as seen in Fig. 1, where the suspenders are represented by dotted lines. The said loops may be made separate from the bosom, and sewed through at both of their ends, as shown in the drawings; or the side pieces of the bosom may be cut or slotted in such manner that the parts represented as O (l by the lines in the drawings shall serve for the loops, the suspenders passing under them in the same way. The advantages of this arrangement of the suspenderloops upon the bosom, to keep the bosom in place, will be clearly seen. The elastic fastening D also serves to fasten the bosom to the buttons of the Waistband, and thus the bosom is kept perfectly smooth; and the loops, moreover, serve to keep the suspenders in place, since they are liable to slip down, especially upon sloping shoulders.
I am aware that the several elements of an overbosom herein shown are old in themselves, and therefore i do not broadly claim said elements; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the open front overbosom A A, the collar B, the suspender-loops O (J, and the adjustable strap D, all substantially as described and shown, for the purpose specified.
