Description

June 2, 1931.A f J. w DROZ, JR 1,808,641
Do'oR RETAINER Filed May 27, 1929 Patented June 2, 1931 UNITED STATES JULES W. DROZ, JR., OF SALT' LK CITY, UTAH Doon RETAINER Appiication mea May 27, 11929. serial No. 366,415.
My present invention has reference to a combined door stop and latch and is primarily designed for employment in connection with garage or like doors.
5 A further object is the provision of a device for this purpose in the nature of a rightangular stake to be partially driven into the ound and to have one of its flanges contacted by the door when the latter is swung to open position, while the second flange has swingably and adjustably secured thereon a catch member to engage with the door and hold the same in its said open position.
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects which will present themselves, the improvement also resides in certain other novel features of construction, combination and operative association of parts, one satisfactory embodiment of which is disclosed by 2U the accompanying drawings.
A further obj ect of the invention is to provide an extremely simple and reliable door retainer, which may be constructed of a few parts that may be made at a minimum cost, and operated by the foot, thus eliminating the necessity of stooping down.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a garage, with parts in section, and showing the doors therefor swung and held in open position in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a detail elevation of the improvement with the latch engaging the door and the stake being driven in the ground,
which latter is shown in section.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the stake looking at the side thereof opposite that disclosed by Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view approximately on the line 4-4 of Figure 3,V
looking in the direction of the arrows.
Of course, when the improvement is employed in connection with two doors as disclosed by Figure 1 of the drawings two of my improvements are employed.
The improvement as above stated, is primarily designed as a stop and latching means for a garage or other outwardly swinging doors.
5D 111 the drawings the numeral 1 designates 'ranged 1n a operation of lifting the latch 12 back and a hinged and outwardly swinging door. At
ar 'suitable distance away from the garage upon which the door 2 is hinged I force into the ground surface the pointed end 3 of the stake member 4 ofthe improvement. By '.55 reference to theV drawings it will be seen that 'the stake member is in the nature of a right angle plate and is preferably of metal or some other suitable hard material. The stake member is so positioned that one of the `l() lianges thereof, indicated by the numeral 5 will be contacted by the door while the outer edge of the` door is disposed only a slight distance away from the second flange 6. At the top of the said second lange I arrange aplate 7 that has an elongated slot 8 there# through. vA nut engaged by a bolt member i 9 is passed through theflange 6 and through the slot 8.A The bo-lt preferably contacts with the washer 10. There is hinged, as at 11, on the upper edge of the plate, which is arline with vor projects slightly above the upper edge of the flange 6 a swing- 'able member in the lnature of a latch 12.l As disclosed by the drawings the outer corner of 7.5
this latch is rounded. When the door is swung against the flange 5 the latch 12 is swung to horizontal position so that the same will engage with the inner face of the door. rIhe stake 4 provides an abutment for the 5.80 door and the swingable element 12 provides a catch for the door forl holding the latter l in open position. By arranging the swingable catch 12 on the plate 7, which it will be noted is adjustably secured to the flange 6,1185 the said plate may be adjusted with respect to the flange 5 so that the latch plate 12 will thus engage with doors of varying thicknesses.
The simplicity and advantages of my improvement will, it is thought, be obvious to those skilled in the art to whichthe invention relates. The device is of an extremely simple nature and may be conveniently operated without the necessity of stooping as the forth can be easily accomplished by foot pressure. A further detailed description is not believed necessary, although I do not wish to be restricted to the precise details herein set forth and,therefore,ho1d myself entitled to make such changes therefrom as fairly fall within the scope of what I clairnl Having described the invention, I claim: 1. A combined y abutment and latch for 5 outwardly swinging doors, comprising a rghtangular stake designed to be partly driven .into the ground and to have one flange thereof contacted by a door when .the latteris K swung to open position, and a hinged catch on the upper face of its second lange swingable and designed to rest `on the said upper end of the' second flange for engaging with the face ofthe door.
2. A combined abutmentand latch for out-` wardly swinging doors, comprising a right- -angular stakedesigned to be partly driven into the groundand to have one vflange there? of 4contacted .by -a door when vthe latter is swung 4to openypositom and a swingable .20 catch on its second flange swingable and de.-
signed ,to rest 'on the upper end of the second langefor engaging with the face ofthe door anda laterally adjustable plate on said seeond flange-on which the latch is hinged., .25 3. A Combined abutment and latch for outf -wardly swinging doors, comprising a rightangular stake designed to be partlyfdriven into the ground and t0 have one flange there- ,of 'contacted by a door when the latter is .3o swungtoopen position, a hingedcatch on the upper end of its second Harige, swingable .Y .thereover in the direction of and designed to have its inner'edge parallel with the door abuttingflange, and a laterally adjustable A .plate on said 'second flange, binding means for holding-the plate adjusted, and said catch `beinghinged to the upper edge'of the -ad ,justable plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. l
