4 Claims. (01. 292-289) This invention relates to inside door locks and more especially that type of lock which is separable from the door and frame, but one that can be conveniently applied to the door and frame to lock the same independently of the locks permanently attached thereto.
One object of the invention is to provide a lock that can be easily applied and removed without damaging the door or frame with which it is used.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device that is inexpensive, easy to manufacture, and requires a minimum amount of time to install.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description and accompanying drawing in which similar characters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device as applied to a door,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof,
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the knob plate,
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the knob locking plate.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the pin locking plate.
Fig. 6 is a top plan View of the same,
Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the stay plate and,
Fig. 8 is a modification of the invention.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, l8 indicates a portion of a door showing the locking device i2 as applied thereto.
The lock I2 consists of a stay plate l4 and knob plate 18 pivotally hinged together by means of a pintle pin 18.
The plate l4 which fits on the edge of the door it comprises an enlarged portion 28, which is rolled at one end to form a sleeve 22 which is adapted to receive the pintle pin [8 therein and a reduced portion 24 having a spur or bolt head 28 which is adapted to be inserted in the bolt keeper in the door frame when the lock is applied to the door.
The knob plate It consists of a base portion 26 having a square bolt receiving opening 28 therein and two wing portions 30, having their ends rolled to form sleeves 32 which are adapted to receive the pintle pin Ill.
The wing portions 38 comprise straight portions 34 on which the sleeves 32 are formed, and straight portions 36, with an inclined portion 88 interposed intermediate the ends thereof and joining the straight portions forms the unitary knob plate IS.
A bolt 48 is positioned in the opening 28 and is adapted to be slidably mounted in the longitudinal slot 42 in the knob locking plate 44.
The plate 44 being retained in position on the plate It by means of a winged nut 48.
The plate 44 comprises two wing portions 48 which are joined at their outer ends by a transverse portion 50 thereby forming a slot 52 in the plate 44.
The wings are bent backward upon themselves at 54 to form a knob looking or retaining portion 56. v v
The plate 44 can be adjusted on the plate I to accommodate knobs of various sizes and positions.
The pin locking plate 68 comprises a base portion 80 having inclined sides 62 and an upstanding portion 83 which is provided with an elongated slot 64 having at its upper end a pin receiving opening 86.
- The opening 68 is adapted to receive the portion 68 which extends at right angles thereto and I is formedintegral with the pin l8.
When the device is to be used the plate I4 is placed on the side of the door in proper position for the head 28 to be received in the keeper in the frame and the door is closed.
The pin I8 is then removed and the plate i6 is slid over the bar of the doorknob 18 until the sleeves 22 and 32 are aligned and the pin [8 is then inserted in the sleeves and the plates l4 and l6 are pivotally joined. The plate 44 is then adjusted on the plate It;
.until the knob is firmly retained in the knob re-- ceiving portion 58 and the winged nut 48 is tightened.
Then the plate 58 is slid over plate l6 and the end 88 of the pin inserted in the opening 68 with the end 88 turned toward the doorknob.
Thus the door is firmly locked and cannot be unlocked until the plate 58 is slid to one side I and the pin l8 removed, which action will then a departure from the spirit of the invention as defined byzthe appended'claims. i V Having ,thusrdescrihedithe invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
I. A device of the character described comprising pivoted plates, a removable pintle pin for piv otally hinging said plates, a bolt head'onsone :of
said plates, a slot in one of said plates adapted to be inserted over the bar of a doorknob, and adjustable means on said plates adapted to contact the outer surface of said knob.
2. The invention as described in claim 1, wherein a pintle locking plate is positioned on one of said first-mentioned plates.
3. The invention as described in claim 1,
- wherein sleeves are formed on said first-mentinned plates toreceive said;pintle. ,4. The invention as described in .claim 1, wherein means is provided on one of said first- :mentioned plates to retain said adjustable means ,on saidplate.
