To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUoUsr DUMPE NEW HAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residingat Cangai, New South Wales, Australia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sliding Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sliding bolts.
1n carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a slidable bolt having spring pressed means co-engaging therewith for retaining the bolt in its projected or looking position, whereby accidental movement of the bolt in the direction of its casing will be effectively prevented.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a locking device including a casing having a slidable bolt therein, to arrange within the casing a spring pressed pivoted member or dog that normally contacts with one of the edges of the bolt and which is designed to engage with a notch in the bolt when the said bolt is projected, and to further provide an actuating member which is pivotally connected to the bolt and which is adapted, when swung in one position, to force the dog out of engagement with the bolt, to permit of the movement of the bolt to within the casing therefor.
With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

Figure 1 is an elevation of a locking means constructed in accordance with the present invention, the sliding bolt being arranged within the casing and one of the side Plates of the casing being removed,

Fig. 5 is an elevation illustrating a slightly modified structure, the side plate of the casing being removed and the bolt in its retracted position, and
Fig. 6 is a similar view but illustrating the bolt in its projected or looking position.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates a substantially rectangular casing having one of its ends I opened and also provided with an open side which is normally closed by a plate (not shown). Arranged within the casing for slidable movement therethrough is a locking bolt 2 .which, of course, when projected is designed to be received in a suitable keeper (not shown). The bolt 2, adjacent to the inner end thereof, is slot-ted longitudinally providing the same with parallel spaced members or arms 3-3, and the said arms upon the lower edge of the bolt are cut longitudinally and the bolt cut transversely, providing the same at the juncture of the arms 3 therewith with a shoulder 4:. W'ithin the casing is pivotally secured, as at 5, a dog 6 which is normally influenced by a spring 7 to bring the end thereof against the edge of the bolt provided'with the shoulder 4, and the said dog is adapted to engage with the shoulder 4 when the bolt is in its projected position, to lock the bolt against accidental movement inward of its casing. The casing is provided with a suitable depressed portion 8 whereby to receive the dog 6 when the latter is in its retracted position or in a position to permit of the inward movement of the bolt with respect to the casing.
The actuating member is indicated by the numeral 9, and preferably comprises a substantially triangular body which is pivoted, as at 10, between the arms 33 adjacent one of the corners of the said arms. The actuating member upon what I will term its inner end is provided with a laterally extending finger piece or knob 11 which is adapted to pass through a suitable elongated slot in the face plate of the lock casing. It will be apparent that upon swinging the member 9 in one direction, the same, contacting with the dog 6 will force the dog against the pressure of its spring 7 to within the depressed portion 8 of the caslng and out of engagement with the shoulder 4 of the bolt,
and upon moving the actuating member 9 longitudinally of the casing the bolt 2 may be drawn to within the casing to the position illustrated in Fig. 1. By reference to the said Fig. 1 it will be noted that the locking member 9 at all times engages with the dog 6 which, as shown, is in the nature of a substantially elongated rectangular element so that danger of the member 9 springing from between the arms 33 of the bolt will be obviated, and it will also be apparent, it is thought, that upon an outward movement of the member 9 the'bolt 2 will be projected to locking position with respect to its casing 1. In Figs; 5 and 6 of the drawings the casing 25 is provided at one of its ends with a reduced passage 26 for the bolt the dog is designed to engage with the shoulder 31 of the bolt when the bolt is moved to its looking position, as illustrated in Fig. 6, of the drawing, and when in this position the shoulder 80 of the said dog will contact with one of the shoulders 28 of the casing, as clearly illustrated in the said Fig. 6 of the drawing.
The actuating member is indicated by the numeral 33, and comprises a triangular plate having one of its corners pivoted, as at 34, adjacent to the upper corner of the portion 29 of the bolt 27. The said portion 29 of the said bolt 27 at a distance from the pivot 8% is provided with an elongated slot 35, through which is passed the stem 36 of a suitable operatingmember, such as a knob. By reference to Fig. 5 of the drawings it will. be noted that the pivoted dog 32 ex- Gopiesof this patent may be obtained for.
erting a pressure upon one of the edges of the bolt 27 will hold the said bolt against accidental sliding, and in operation the stem 36 is grasped and moved longitudinally of the casing to project the bolt 27, the spring influenced dog swinging the member 33 to the position illustrated in Fig. 6, when the bolt has reached the limit of its movement in an outward swinging direction. A downward pressure upon the stem 36 will cause the dog 32 to be moved out of en agement with the shoulder 31 of the bolt to permit of the bolt being moved inward of its casing. Preferably a transverse pin 37 is arranged in the chamber of the casing and is designed to be contacted by the outer or free end of the dog 32 to limit the swinging of the said dog in one direction.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
In a device for the purpose set forth, substantially rectangular casing having a bolt passage therein, and one of the walls provided by the passage being depressed, a shouldered bolt having an inner bifurcated end arranged within the passage, a pivoted dog in the passage, spring means for forc ing the dog in the direction of the bolt, an actuating member centrally pivoted to one of the corners at the bifurcated end of the bolt and received in the bifurcation and overlying the dog, and an offset finger upon the actuating member, all as and for the purpose set forth.
