UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMMETT J. BEBSAMEN, OF ST. LOUIS MISSOURI.
KEYLESS LOCK.
Application filed April 26,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that'I EMMii'rT J. REBSAMEN, a citizen of the United States residing at St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis City and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keyless Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a keyless lockand has for its principal object the production of a padlock constructed in such a manner that only persons familiar with the construction thereof would be able to open same.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be durable and may be constructed ata small cost.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in'the drawings.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof.
By referring to the accompanying draw ings by numerals it will be seen that 1 designates the casing which may be of any preferred shape and in the present instance is provided with a key-hole 2 which is used only to deceive these unfamiliar with the construction of the padlock. At the top of the casing 1 I have provided the slots 3 and 4:. The free end of the shackle 5 is adapted to pass through the slot 3 while the pivoted end thereof passes through the slot et. This shackle 5 is pivotally mounted within the casing 1 by means of the bolt 6. The shackle 5 consists of a curved body portion and is provided at its pivoted end with the offset extension 7 and at its free end with the looking lug or extension 9. In order to hold this shackle in an open position I have provided the platform 10 upon which is mounted the expansion coil spring 11 which bears against the offset portion 7 thus tending to hold the shackle in an open position.
Centrally located within the casing 1 I have situated the plate 12 which extends longitudinally of the casing so as to be parallel with the side walls thereof and is pro vided with a plurality of pockets for re ceiving the springs 13. The springs 13 may be of anydesired number but as shown I have provided the three springs 13 which Specification of Letters Patent.

1920. Serial No. 376,787.. I
will normally hold the locking member 1 1 in a locked position. This locking member 141 is pivoted at its top corner by means of the bolt 15 and is provided with the top arm 16 having the upper beveled end 17. In order to hold the member 14 from rotating any further by the springs 13 I have provided the stop 18 which extends transversely of the casing 1 so as to abut the top of the arm 16. The operating arm 19 extends at right angles to the body portion of the member 19 so that the end thereof will aline and register with the opening 22 in the side of the casing 1.
An abutment 20 is situated transversely of. the casing 1 so as to support the spring 21 underneath the arm 16 and thus insure the holding of the member 14; in a locked position that is to hold the arm 16 against the stop 18 as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawmg.
In order to operate this lock it will be seen that the operating arm 19 will be pushed toward the plate 12 thus causing the locking member 14: to pivot swinging the arm 16 downwardly and thus allowing the end 17 to slip from engagement with the lug or extension 9 thus allowing the shackle- 5 to spring to an open position by means of the spring 11 pressing against the oifset extension 7. In order to lock the device it will be seen that it is only necessary to pass the shackle within the slot 3 so that the lug will engage the beveled end 17 of the arm 16 thus slipping over the locking lug 9 and the springs 13 and 21 will move the arm 16 to the position shown in Fig. 1 thus securely locking the shackle 5.
The above construction and arrangement of parts refers to the preferred embodiment but I realize that it is possible to make many changes in the combination, arrangement, and constructions of the various parts thereof without departing from the scope of my invention and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the class described comprising a casing, a shackle pivotally carried by said casing, a plate extending longitudinally in said casing and provided with a plurality of pockets, expansion springs situated in said pockets, a locking member pivotally carried within said casing so as to be engaged by said springs, said locking member provided with an arm adapted to engage the free end of said shackle for holding same in a locked position, and means for normally holding said arm in locked engagement with said shackle when same is in a closed position, and means for releasing said arm from said shackle.
2. In a device of the class described the combination of a casing and a shackle, said shackle provided with a curved body portion having an offset extension at its pivoted end and a locking lug at its free end, a platform situated within said casing adjacent the pivoted end of said shackle, a spring mounted upon said platform so as to engage said offset extension for normally holding said shackle in an open position,a plate situated" longitudinally within said casing and provided with a plurality of pockets, springs situated within said pockets,'a locking member engaged by said springs, said locking member provided with an arm at its top portion so as to engage said locking lug of the shackle, and means for operating said locking member so as to disengage the arm thereof from-the looking lug of the shackle.
3/In a deviceof the class described the combination of a casing and a shackle, pivotally mounted within said casing, said shackle provided with an offset extension at its pivoted end and a locking lug at its free end, means provided for normally holding said shackle in an open position, a plate carried longitudinally of the casing and provided with a plurality of expansion springs, a locking member pivotally carried within said casing, an arm situated adjacent the top of said locking member and provided with a beveled end portion for engaging the locking lug of the shackle, an operating arm extending from said locking member soas to register with an opening provided in said casing, an abutment extending transversely of the casing, a spring mounted on said abutment so as to engage the bottom of the locking arm for normally holding same in a locked position, and a stop situated above said locking arm so as to limit the movement thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
