Description

J. SMITH GARTER Filed Aug. 31, 1929 INVENTOR Oscar SmHh 11 ATToRNgfls j Patente d Octa 1930 OSCAR J.-'sMITH, or essays. y,
GARTER This-invention relates to garters and is particularly directed to "garters for mens Wear.
calf of the wearers leg providing maximum comfort to the wearer and full suspenslon of the sock for all positions of the leg in walk I lng, standlng and slttlng.
I am well aware of the fact that itis not;
new and novelto mount the hose clasp on "an adjustable suspensionpiece so that it maybe Mmoved relative. to the leg band but my 1nvention residesin the particular construction zowhich is herein disclosed'in accomplishing this desirableresult While producing apmaximum of reliability and a minimum of expens'e of manufacture and at the same tlme,
.maintaining all the desirable features found e in the garters now known to the art. 1
Itis still a further object of this inventio to provide an'adjustable suspension means for the clasp which will'have no loops (except the small one made around the retaining 1 3 bar of the hose clasp itself), thus decreasin the amount of material required, 1
Fig. 1 isa frontelevatlon of a garter embodying my invention; and r Fig.2 is a vertical sectional elevation through the center of the pad.
A preferred form of my invention illus trated in the drawings comprises the adjustjable leg band 10 usually constructed of an elastic fabric; The fixed end 11 of the .band* 10 is sewed orotherwise secured totheupper part of the pad 12 at one side thereof. Pad
12maybe made of any of the usual materials now used for this-purpose and its shape and i configuration maybe of the usual shapeand configuration, but in my lnvention it 1s furnished with a channel adapted toqreceivea suspension member 14: andformed by two layersof fabric whichmake up the pad 12, that-is, layer15 which'is adjacent to the leg of the wearer when the garter is in usezand an outer layer 16, which is? secured to layer I .15txcept at the center of the padwhere they A particularimprovement efi'ected by my 5 invention is the means for adjustably su's pendiligtlie hose clasptojthe leg band theije- H by enabling proper adjustment'ofthe loca tion of seourement of the clasp to the hose.
relative to the leg band and affording the lo 0 cation ofthe leg band about andabove the:
commodate the width of suspension member- 14 and allow this suspension member. to slide freely 'therebetween clearly illustrated "in i oured =a fclamping'buckle 17 through which suspension member 14 is adapted to slide and e by means of whichsuspension member 14 may 0 be locked to pad 12*inany desired position.
The suspension member 14 is made of a slngle strip of fabric which maybe of elastic .material and its width is such relative to the rhannel formedbylayers 15 and 16 and the buckle 17, that when buckle-17 is in its open position, the suspension member 14.- will slide ireely up and downas viewed in .Fi 1
through the channel and the buckle The lower end of. suspension member 14' is equipped withthe usual hose clasp made up of a rubberbutton 19 and the closedU-shaped eye member QOco-operating therewith and equipped with the usual fabricbacking piece 21 to protect the wearer from contact with the metal portion ofthe clasp. r e
A detachable clasp for the leg band 10 is illustrated in Fig. l and comprisesya link 13 of the band 10 to the pad. 7 At lt is illus 8 trated the conventional buckle which is adapted to slide along the band 10 andthus enable an adjustm ent of thejlength thereof. to be readily made.
lVhile I have herein shown and described a 9 5 preferredembodiment or my invention, and
its application to garters, I Wish it to be un "derstood that itis not limited to all the precisedetails of construction herein set forth by way of illustratiom nor to the particular "application to garters, as modification and variation maybe made in the construction of l the garters and may be applied toother purposeswithout-departingfrom the spirit of the UNITED STA res RATE invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claim.
I claim.
In a garter of the class described, a substantially triangular pad made of a plurality of layers of fabric, an adjustable elastic leg band, adapted to encircle the calf of the Wearer to support the load imposed by the hose Which is attached to the garter, and perinanently secured at its one end to an upper corner of said pad and detachably secured at its other end to the other upper corner of said,
pad, a channel formed in said pad between the layers thereof, hose clasp means, an elastic strap attached to said hose clasp means and adapted to slide up and down through said channel to adjust the distance between said hose clasp means and the pad and a clasp on said pad adapted to lock said strap and pad together.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification this 30th day of August, 1929. OSCAR J. SMITH.
