1 U ITE STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
GEORGE R. EAGER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN.OVE'RALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,939, dated May 2, 1876; application filed March 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. EAGER, of
'Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pantaloon Garments, Blouses, 850.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which willenable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which My invention relates to an improvement onthe method of adjusting garments to persons of different sizes, patented to me June 11, 18 72. In that patent the waistband, while made hollow, is provided with but a single strap and buckle, the gathering being all done from one side to the other. This, for
vsome reasons, is not as convenient as it might otherwise be; it therefore becomes desirable to provide the best means possible of accomplishin g the result through the instrumentality of the principle laid down and covered by that patent. With this object in view, my present improvement consists in combining with a hollow waistband, provided with an opening on each side of the garment,.two
' straps and two buckles, so arranged as to adjust the garment to theiwearer at each side, which is not only more convenient and easier to accomplish, but presents a more even, uniform, and neat appearance.
To enable others skilled in the art to make, construct, and use my improvement, I will now proceed to describe it in detail, omitting a particular description of such parts as are 'old and not essential to a full understanding of this improvement; here premising that the invention is equally applicable to all kinds of these parts, the inner end, consisting of cord n, and the other, the outer end, of cloth m. The inner end of the cord ends of each strap I prefer to bifurcate or divide lengthwise, so as to attach one to the inner and the other to the outer side, at the top and bottom,
- respectively, of the waistband, thus leaving a clear space through which to run the cloth end of the other strap out through the opening made for the purpose on the sides of the waistband. The makingthe inner end of the straps of cord allows the two to cross each other readily in the middle, without preventing them from running freely as the garment is adjusted.
Immediately adjoining each of the two openings c e on the waistband, through which the straps are protruded, is secured a buckle, one, 8, next opening 6, and one, t, at opening 0.
Through buckle s the loose end of strap 1) passes, and through buckle t the corresponding or cloth end of strap 0. By means of these straps and buckles the garment can be adjusted to fit the wearer.
In Figs. 3 and 4 a modification of that plan is shown, it only ditt'ering in making the straps b and c entirely of cloth, and securingthe inner end of the one to the inner, and the corresponding end of the other to the outer, half of the hollow waistband, the arrangement of the buckles s and t and openings e e being the same in each.
This garment also differs in that the waistband is made continuous all around, so as not to unbutton' in front, although the garment is open in front below, as in the other garment.
It will also be apparent that a single strap, either wholly of cloth or partly of cloth and partly of cord, may be used in connection with the two buckles in the same manner; in which latter case only the ends of the strap .may be made of cloth, and this strap may either be entirely loose orstitched in thennid- In-testimony'that I claimcthe foregoingies dle to the waistband. :myown Iefl'i-x .my signature in presence of Having thus described my invention, what two witnesses.
I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is- GEORGE R. EAGER.
A hollow waistband .for pantaloon and oth-.
er garments, when constructed and provided Witnesses:
with two straps, b and c, and two buckles, s MosEs S. TOWER,
and t, in the manner and for the purpose set; ABNERJ. TOWER.
