Overalls.
' Patented Aug'. 31,1875.

.. NITE STATES GEORGE E. EAGER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,318, dated August 31, 1875; application filed March 19, 1875.
CASE F.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. EAGER, of Boston, in the county of Suii'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pantaloon Garments, Blouses, 850.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents an isometrical perspective view of a garment having my improvement applied thereto 5 and Fig. 2, a horizontal section through the waistband, the straps being uncut.
My invention relates to an improvement on the method of adjusting the waists of garments to fit persons of different sizes, patented to me June 11, 1872. In that patent the garment was provided with but a single strap and buckle, wherewith to make the necessary adjustments to the wearer.
My present improvement differs'from that in having two straps and three buckles, one being arranged at each side and the other at the middle. The two side buckles are intended to give the garment ageneral fit to the wearer, and when one adjusted to remain so afterward, and the third or middle one to give that special adjustment to the garment which varying circumstances may require; or, in other terms, the two first act to give that fit to the garment which it would have if specially made for him, and the other that fit which the ordinary strap and buckle of a pair of pants afterward give.
To enable others skilled in the art to make, construct, and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe it in detail, omitting a particular description of such parts as are old and not essential to a full understanding of this improvement; here premising that the invention is equally applicable to all kinds of pantaloon and other garments, such as pantaloons, drawers, overalls, blouses, 85c.
This improvement involves the use of a waistband, a, to the garment made hollow for about a half or twothirds of the way around, in which one or two straps, b and c, are inclosed. When one strap only is used, it may or not be stitched to the middle of the hollow portion of the band a, with its ends left loose or free, and so as to project sufficiently far beyond the openings 01 e in the waistband as to meet and buckle in the middle of the garment at the front, a suitable buckle, g, for the purpose being stitched to one of its ends. The ends b and c as they issue from the waistband are, respectively, connected with buckles m and a, made fast to the waistband, one at each side, the end I) to buckle m, and end 0 to buckle n. These buckles serve to adjust the pants to the average size of the wearer, and when once adjusted are left in that condition; while the buckle g at the front serves to connect the two ends of the strap together, so as to adjust the garment to the special requirement of the wearer, as circumstances may dietate. Where two independent straps, b and c, are used, such as those illustrated in Fig. 2, one end of each strap is secured to the opposite sides of the waistband, and so as to run and pass each other in opposite directions, the end of the one being sewed to the outer, and the end of the other to the inner, half of the waistband. These straps are made long enough to pass out through openings (1 and e, and be fastened together at their detached ends by buckle g in iron t, they being first con-' nected to buckles "In and a, for the purpose of giving the average adjustment, as in the case of the single strap. The two straps, for some reasons, when thus used, in connection with the two side buckles m and n and middle buckle g, are more convenient, and give more satisfaction than a single strap used in the same way, as such are more easy of adjustment than the latter.
Having described my improvement, What I claim is- A waistband for pantaloon and other garments, when provided and arranged with a strap or straps, and with two buckles, m and a, at the sides, and another, g, in the middle, in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE E. EAGER.
Witnesses:
J. TYLER POWELL, D. G. STUART.
