IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-SCARFS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,742, dated May 2, 18,76; application filed v March 20, 1876.
To all lwhom it mag/concern:
Be it known that LTEoMAs JEFFERSON FLAGG, ot' the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvevthe durability of that part ot' the scarf which comes in contact with the chin or beard of the nearer also, to give a more natm al appearance to the artificial knot. To this endmy invention consists of the combination of an imitation knot, with the aprons of a scarf", one of which is an adjustable apron, and can be so arranged as to present a different wearing, surface, when desired, by simply drawing the apron up or down in the artificial knot. It also consists of the combination ofthe adjustable apron with the neck-band of the scarf, said adjustable apron giving freedom and ease in pushing through the stabber and fixing neck-band.
ln order that myinvention may be fully understood, I have represented in lthe aecompan yin g drawing, and will proceed to describe,
a scarf embodying the inventionl in the best form thus far produced.
Figure l represents a front view of the scarf, with the adjustable apron drawn out ot' the artificial knot to show the attachment of which projects above the knot, has sewed to it the back apron C, andthe neck-band D is also connected to this end ot' the material by sewing the same at point a. The stabber E is that end of the neck-band which is passed through the artificial knot, and the neck-band i's held in its proper position by means of a needle; but any well-known method of securing the neck-band may be used. As the adjust-able apron U is to be moved up or down in the imitation knot, as the ease may require,
to present a different wearing-surface, and to facilitate this movement I place between the lining and the material which forms the apron a piece of pasteboard. (Represented in dotted lines in the drawing at d.) The neck-band is passed around the neck and through the hole lF and imitation knot B into the position reloop of the adjustable apron, and also into said artificial knot.
2. The combination, substantially as before set forth, of' the imitation knot, the adjustable apron securedv to said knot and adjustable in the same, the front apron secured at its upper end in the said knot, and the neck-band having one of its ends fast to said knot, and its `other end arranged to slip through said knot behind the faces of both aprons.
