IMPROVEMENT lN NECK-TIES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,638, dated April 27, 1875; application filed April 16, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB H. Fnnrscn, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Neck-Wear; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the combination, with an ordinary bow or scarf, of a retracting-tie, so arranged that the bow or scarf may be worn as a tie when desired, and when worn as a bow or scarf the tie will be invisible, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front View, and Fig. 2 a rear view, of a bow embodying my invention. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are enlarged detached views of the tie attachment.

A represents the cross-loop, and B B the ends, of an ordinary bow, made and fastened to the shield G in the ordinary manner. D isa metal casing, provided with cars a a, to be fastened to the outside of the shield O, and covered by the cross-loop A of the bow, orthe bow itself, so as to be invisible, and also for the purpose of not inoommoding the wearer. \Vithin this casing is a spool, E, containing the tie or band G, and fastened on a central rod or shaft, 1). The tie or band G is passed through a guide, (I, on the outer surface at one end of the shield, so that it will go in the required direction. This tie or ribbon is from fourteen to sixteen inches in length, and will, when pulled out, go around the neck to be fastened to a hook, e, or button at the other end of the shield. The tie is worked by a spring, h, within the casing D, and will adjust itself to the size of any neck, and thereby form a wellfitting tie.

The spring h may be of any suitable material, and of such length and width as to have the required elasticity of winding up and unwinding a tie, ribbon, or band of the required length.

The same invention may be applied to ascarf as well as to a bow.

The advantages of this invention are principally as follows: It will make it possible to wear a bow with either a turned down or standing collar, and in either Way with equal facility. Ties need not be made of various lengths, as the operation of the spring will al low the tie or band only to go the required length. It does away with long ties to go around the neck, to be then tied in front, which soon become worn. The bow, with my invention attached thereto, retains a better and uniform shape all the time, and answers as well as the usual tie, is more durable, and

saves the trouble of tying; and is also cheaper than a long tie of the same size, appearance, and material.

When worn as a bow, the tie is entirely invisible, and out of the way.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl. The combination, with a bow or scarf, of a tie, G, rendered retractable entirely within the bow or scarf, by means of a spring concealed within said bow or scarf, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The combination of the casing D, spool E, tie G, and spring h, arranged within a bow or scarf, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
