' UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
YVILLIAM MUIR ANDREWVS, OF GLASGOWV, SCOTLAND, ASSIGNOR TO DAVID B. MACMEHAN AND SAMUEL IV. I-IURDLE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 620,403, dated February 28, 1899.
Application filed December 31, 1897 Serial No. 665,254. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM MUIR AN- DREWS, manufacturer, late of 217 St. Georges road, in the city of Glasgow, Scotland, but now of 21 Endsliegh Gardens,Partickhill road, in said city, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Connected with Shirts, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 19,386, hearing date October 16, 1893,) of which the following is a specification.
My said invention has for its object the providing of a shirt with an improved device for keeping the bosom or front from bulging or protruding in use. This object is attained by the device illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are respectively front and back views of a shirt embodying my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in both figures of the drawings.
In carrying out my invention I provide the side edges of the bosom, about midway between the upper and lower ends thereof, with side flaps or tags attached at one edge to the bosom and extending outwardly free from both the body and bosom, to which flaps or tags are secured the ends, respectively, of an adjustable band or tape which is led around the back of the shirt.
In the drawings, A indicates the bosom, which may be of any desired shape and is attached to the body in the usual manner by stitching along its edges. At each side of the bosom and about the center of length thereof the flaps or tags B and C are fastened. These flaps or tags I prefer to have triangular in shape and fastened at one edge to the side edge of the bosom by stitching, so as to leave the flaps or tags extending outwardly free from both the body and bosom of the shirt.
A tape or band E is led around the back of the shirt, and the ends thereof are fastened, respectively, to the flaps or tags B and C. I prefer to have the attachment ,of both ends of the band to the flaps made detachable by providing buttonholes in the flaps and buttons D and G on the ends of the tape to on- Of course this means but of course the length of the band may be readily adjusted by many different devices which will readily suggest themselves to one skilled in the art, such as by having the strap formed in two parts with a buckle or other take-up device on one part, which modification is so obvious and well understood as not to require illustration, or as an adjunct to said adjustable device or as a substitute therefor the band may be provided with an elastic section H therein to maintain a yielding tension of the band around the body of the wearer when in use.
By having theends of the bandattaohed to the flaps or tags and the tags attached along one edge to the bosom, extending in both directions along the edge comparatively a great distance from the line of the attachment of the band, the pull or draw of the band is distributed over a snfficient area to' prevent the breaking of the bosom, which would be promoted by attaching the banddireotly to the edge of the bosom.
A shirt provided with attachments embodying my invention is especially adapted for use as a dress-shirt, which is usually worn with a dress-suit having a very low-cut vest, as it serves to hold the bosom fiat to the chest of the wearer whether standing or sitting and prevents'the bulging or protruding of the same beyond the edges of the vest, which is exceedingly inconvenient and annoying to the wearer.
I am aware that prior to my invention an effort has been made to attain the object of my invention by means of a band or strap having bifurcated ends, which ends are de signed to be buttoned to the side edges of the bosom at two different points; but this struc= ture is not the same as my invention nor will it accomplish the object of my invention, because it will draw across the bosom of the shirt on two lines instead of having the pull of the bands equally distributed throughout the No. 620,403.. Patented Feb. 28, I899.
