IMPROVEMENT IN DUPLEX REVERSIBLE BUCKLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,310, dated March 28, 1876 application filed July as, 1:574.

To all whom tt may concern:

Be it known that we, DAVID S. WALLACE, of Yonkers, New York, NATHANIEL H. FUR- NESS, of Tarrytown, New York, and SIGOUR- NEY WALES, of New York city, have invented a Duplex Reversible Buckle, of which the following is a specification:

The object of our invention is a buckle which may be used on double-faced leather, silk, or other material, so that the article may be worn with either surface outside without changing the position of the buckle.

Figure 1 shows the under side of the buckle. having the clasp-plate A made of a piece of metal folded frornits center, which is cut away at the fold D in part to admit of the passage of the fly end of the material. E E are openings, which are cut out of this plate on both of its surfaces, and are intended to receive the hooks F F, and secure it in its position. The clasp A is secured to the material by the use of the hooks G and the clamp H, both of which pass through the same eyelet in the material, and become fixed thereon by the springing over of the clamp on the springhook.

The formation of the plate 0 differs from A only in the dropping out of the cut-away portion of the folded part, which is not required for both ends. This plate is secured to the center plate B, in Fig. 1, with the hinge I I, but may be made separate, as shown in Fig. 4:.

The center plate B in Fig. 1 has upon its under side the hooks F F and F F. These hooks rest within the openings E E in plate 0, while those opposite to the pair thus placed become the hooks to hook into the openings E E in the clasp A.

When it is required to reverse the article, so as to bring the other surface to the outside, these hooks change places, and the former hooks swing on the hinge into E E in plate 0, and those before occupying them become the hooks.

Fig. 2 shows a front view of No. 1, and Fig. 3 is the sectional view of Figs. Nos. 1 and 2.

The center plate B can also be made without the hinge I I, as a separate piece, and the two sets of hooks F F and F F both used in hooking into the openings E E in the clasp A and the plate 0, as shown in Fig. 4..

Fig. 6 shows the clasp A arranged for use where it becomes desirable to avoid making eyelets in the material. The edges of the ends of the clasp are folded inward at an angle, K K, forming shoulders upon which the edges of the slide L rest when the clasp is secured to the material. The slide L is formed by folding at the center, and each so formed flap M M has an opening, N, for the passage of the material, and the middle bar 0 is supplied with points P P P.

The operation is as follows: The end of the material enters one of these openings from between the two flaps, and passes round the bar 0 and through the other opening Nin the opposite flap. The slide thus arranged is entered at the top or upper side of the clasp A, arranged with shoulders K K, and passes downward into its place, the material coming out through the space between the,,shoulders K K, and the edges of the flaps M M, resting thereon, render the connection secure.

This same arrangement is also applied to the plate U, with or without the hinge I I.

We claim as our invention 1. The combination, with the end plates or clasps for the ends of a waist-belt or garters, of a reversible face-plate, B, hinged to one of such end plates, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the reversible faceplate B with the plates A and 0, having the slots at E, and suitable clasps or fastenings for connection to the ends of the belt, substantially as described.

3. The combination, with plate A or O, having shoulders K, of slide L, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
