SUSPENDERS. 3 APPLICATION FILED NOV. 10, 1309.

A T FCE.
EDWIN J. HAYDEN AND JOHN R. GORDON, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
SUSPENDEES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWIN J. HAYDEN and JOHN R. GORDON, citizens of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Tm rovements in Suspenders, of which the ollowing is a specification.
Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in suspenders and it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly described and ascertained in and by the following claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of our complete inventlon showing a portion thereof in a detached position. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 4Lt of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a plate which we employ in connection with the several parts of the suspenders for adjusting the buttoning straps on either end of the suspenders.
Referring to the drawings 1 represents the sliding connection for connecting the several portions comprising the suspenders and is located at the back of the wearer adj acent to or at a suitable distance above the buttoning end of the same. The connecting portion 1 is composed of a central elongated loop 2, to which is attached, along its opposite longitudinal portions plates 3, 'a portion of which are approximately of the same length as the longitudinal portions of said link for holding the plates in rigid connection with the link thus formed, the said plates having extensions 1 which are narrower than the remaining portions and looped to freely receive two oppositely located links 5, the latter being approximately the same length as the central loop 2, whereby the links are susceptible to a transverse and independent movement in respect to the central link 2 yet permitting'the said links to turn independently of one another. The rear buttoning straps 6 are similarly constructed, one end of one of said straps being passed through the central loop 2 and having its terminal end sewed to or otherwise attached to the opposite strap forming a sliding loop 7 and the end of the opposite Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 10, 1909.
Patented Dec. 27, 1910.
Serial No. 527,256.
strap is passed through the lower link 5 of the sliding connection and attached to the other strap forming a loop 7, whereby a sliding connection is made for the buttoning straps in respect to the loop and link referred to.
The shoulder bands at one end pass through the upper link 5 and at their opposite ends are attached to one end of a strap 10 at a point '11, the lower ends of said straps being secured in any suitable and mechanical manner to the lower ends of said shoulder bands, and fixed to the straps 10 adjacent to the lower ends thereof are snap buttons 12 which are adapted to be received by the catch or snap eyelets 13 formed in the plates 14, after the buttoning loops 15 have been placed in their proper position as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The plates 14 are provided with oppositely located slots 15 on either side of the snap opening or eyelet formed therein, said slots being formed by a suitable die or other means whereby outwardly projecting elongated frictional edges 16 are formed for the purpose hereinafter to be described. The straps 10 are passed through the slots 15 of the plates 1% in the manner as clearly shown in Fig. 2, in which instance the straps will bear directly upon the elongated frictional edges 16 of the plates 14, thereby bringing the parts 'in a binding or frictional contact with one another when strain is brought to bear upon the buttoning loops 15, but when said strain is released the plates may be adjusted in any position along the length of the straps 10 for holding the buttoning loops 15 in their proper or desired position in respect to the shoulder bands of the suspenders.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
A suspender comprising a shoulder band, a strap, one end of which is secured to said band at a suitable distance along its length and having its opposite end also attached to the lower end of the band, a plane oblong plate upon said strap having elongated openings adjacent to its opposite ends through which the strap freely passes, said plate being provided on one face and at the inner sides of said slots with flanges projecting at right angles to one face of the plate, the ends I In testimony whereof we aflix our signaof said flanges it'rictionally binding on the tures in presence of two Witnesses.
stra .3 When strain is brou 'ht to bear upon the T T T lattdrand a snap button secured to the strap adjacent to the lower end thereof, and L adapted to be received by the snap opening formed in the plate, as and for the purpose described.
