Description

Patented Mai- 18, 1930 I UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE OTTO 3611M, OF DARMSTADT, GERMANY EMULSION No Drawing.- Application filed October 5, 192?, Serial No. 224,280, and .in Germany November 13, 1926.
My invention relates to emulsions and more especially emulsions adapted for tanning purposes.
I have discovered that freshly precipitated 5 metal hydroxides enable insoluble oils or fats to form emulsions, which emulsions can be advantageously used for tanning purposes. If found necessary some water may be added to the mixture.
I have also found that in particular freshly precipitated moist aluminum hydroxide is especially suitable for such purpose, and furthermore, that by the additional use of urea in the emulsion the coloring is favorably af- 15 fected thereby. I,
The following example will serve as an illustration 1 10 kilogrammes of neats-foot oil are intimately mixed with one kilogram-me of freshly precipitated moist aluminum hydroxide. An emulsion is formed thereby, to which, if desired, e. g. for tanning purposes, is added a corresponding amount of water while the emulsion remains in a colloidal state.'
As an example for the use of urea the following may serve: 4
25 kilograms of cod-liver oil are intimate 1y mixed with 3 kilograms of, freshly precipitated chromic hydroxide and 12 kilo- I grams of urea in 20 liters of water.
The amounts of oil or fat and of the precipitated metal hydroxide may, of course, be varied to suit special conditions, and the 35 emulsion may be used either with or without the addition of urea.
. I claim:
An emulsion for tanning purposes comprising a mixture of a fatty substance and 4G freshly precipitated aluminum hydroxide.
In testimony whereof I aifix-my signature.
OTTO ROHM.
