Abstract

One or more polysiloxanes, e.g. polymethyl siloxane, polyethylsiloxane and polyphenylsiloxane, preferably having a viscosity of between 20 and 100,000 centistokes at 25 DEG C., are included in skin-protective compositions that are oil-in-water emulsions and which also contain one or more mineral or vegetable and one or more emulsifying agents, but not nitrocellulose. The polysiloxanes may be present in the proportion of 4 to 35 per cent by weight of the compositions. Specification 714,795, [Group VI], is referred to.ALSO:A skin protective composition which is oil-in-water emulsions comprise one or more polysiloxanes, one or more animal or vegetable fats are or were emulsifying agents and is devoid of nitrocellulose. The preferred polysiloxanes used are polymethyl siloxane, polyethylsiloxane or polyphenylsiloxane and the viscosity is between 20 and 100,000 centistokes at 25 DEG C. By animal or vegetable fat is meant the triglycerides or triesters of glycerol and long chain aliphatic acids, both saturated and unsaturated, e.g. vegetable fats such as almond oil, arachis oil, cottonseed oil, olive oil, palm oil, sesame oil, castor oil and soya bean oil; animal fats such as prepared internal body fats, e.g. lard. Suitable emulsifying agents are the salts of fatty acids, e.g. salts of stearic acid with alkali metal bases, e.g. sodium hydroxide, or with organic bases, e.g. triethanolamine, or combinations of fatty alcohols for example cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol and cetostearyl alcohol with long chain quaternary ammonium salts or mixtures thereof, e.g. cetrimide, or with sulphated fatty alcohols, for example dodecyl sulphate or their salts, e.g. sodium or triethanolamine dodecyl sulphate. The compositions may contain from 4 to 35 per cent by weight of polysiloxane, from 2 to 50 per cent by weight of fat and from 3 to 15 per cent by weight of emulsifier, but the total polysiloxane content and fat content should not exceed 50 per cent by weight of the composition. In an example a typical composition is prepared by mixing 4 parts of a polysiloxane (700 centistokes at 25 DEG C.), 2 parts of olive oil and 10 parts of stearic acid at 60-65 DEG C., and adding the mixture to a solution of 0.6 parts of sodium hydroxide in 65.4 parts of water at 60-65 DEG C.
