Abstract
Oleaginous compositions for application to the skin comprise about 5 to 20% (by weight) of C12-20 fatty acids (stearic and palmitic preferred), about 10 to 30% of C12-20 unsaturated fatty acids (oleic and linoleic preferred), about 10 to 20% of glyceryl monostearate, about 15 to 20% of a fixed oil (a liquid mixture of di- and tri-glyceryl esters of higher fatty acids, corn oil being preferred), from about 2 to 10% of a wax (esters of C12-20 fatty acid esters with C12-20 fatty alcohols e.g. spermaceti, cetyl palmitate and cetyl oleate) about 2 to 5% of cholesterol, about 3 to 8% squalene and about 5 to 15% of petrolatum. The above composition may form the oil phase of a water-in-oil emulsion 1 part oil to about 1 to 19 parts water) and an oil-in-water emulsion (about 1 to 15 parts per cent water). Optional ingredients include polyhydric alcohols e.g. glycerin and propylene glycol, surfactants, anti-oxidants, preservatives, sunscreens, vitamins, antibiotics e.g. neomycin sulphate and anti - inflammatory agents e.g. hydrocortisone acetate and 6a -methyl - 9a - fluoro - 11b ,17a - dihydroxy - 1,4-pregnadiene-3,20-dione.
