Abstract

A medicinal ointment for nasal application is obtained by mixing extracts of cardamoms, neem and myrobolans into a base formed mainly or wholly of animal fat in an atmosphere of steam and adding camphor to the mixture, the sum of the proportions of camphor and of the extracts of cardamoms and neem being greater than that of the extract of myrobolans. The fatty base may be the ghee of buffalo milk or a mixture of castor oil with an excess of lard. The mixture may also contain extract of fennel fruit and/or a perfume such as oil of sandalwood or musk. The hot mixture from the steam treatment may be filtered through a fine cloth and filled while still hot into soft metal tubes in which it is marketed, the setting to an ointment taking place in the tube. The extracts are prepared by soaking the materials in a small quantity of water until the material begins to ferment.
