Like Ietters indicate like pz'mrts.
My inveution consists of a toy rattle, simi- 1ar in operation to a watchmans rattle, bui: having cwo anns revolviug in opposbe direct-ions. Instead 0f doweling the cla-pper'iu placa, as described, 1'1; may be made in one stra-ght piene, aud be inserted and fastened, by glue or otherwise, ima narrow slot out for that purpose Withiu the arxn A.
This ratsle may be made of wood or any auy other suitable materia]. Its parts are thus described: TWO arms,A A, are slotted at the end to receive the rattliug; xnechauigm and rvvolve, loosel y on a rod, a, which connects ;he arms With the l1a-ndle B. Within the slot 0f thezmn A is a ratchet-wheel, C, fitting tgh tly upon the rod a. Agansl: ths ratchetwvheel plzxys a tongue or clapper, D, of W00d or any suitable nmteral ofsufluen: elasticity. The olupper 1s doweled into the zmn witbin the slot by meaus of a dowel-pin, 1). By this arrungement che clapper operates equally well whichever directiou the ar1n, is swuug. The arms terminate in a kuob 01 enlzugemenb, E, thereby giving additioual weight, 130 furnish momentum when revolving.
The mode of operation' is as follows: T0
swing one of the arms A by gving it, by the handle, a rotary motion, while the other arm is prevented, at; the saune Lime, from revolvin g; but, when the first; arm l1as acquired full momentum, the second arm is thrown by the band over in the opposite direction. The result is that the two arms revolve in opposte directons ai: the szune time, and both ratlzles are in full operation, thus constituting au amusing toy.
This mode of fixng the cl-apper-tongue may be successfull y appled to the larger or watchmans rattle. such rattles are fastened upon one side of the swingiug arm. The result is that; the mtble can be sprung in only oue direction, as in case itis swung ima wroug directiou' the clapper acts as a pawl aganst the ratchet-wheel, and. prevents th'e revolutiou.
If {che clapper were doweled, as above described, with'iu the arm, the arm could be swuug in either direction with effect.
I therefore claim as a nove] and useful invention, and desire to secure by Letbers Patent- 4 1. 'lhe combination, in a rattle, of two arms A A, capable of revolviug in directions opposite to each othr, With a ratla.ing deviata, O D, substzmLially as described.
2. The combination of the amns A A, weighted ai; E E, and slotted ai; 0116 end, the haudle B, with its md a, the ratchetz-wheel O 0, and its clappers D D, With dowel-piu 1), all madg and arranged to operate substantially as specified.
