UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY J. H. SCHUETT, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
ALARM-LOCK SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,527, dated April 10, 1883.
Application led July 27, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENEYJOHN HERMANN SGHUETT, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements i'n Alarm-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this speciGatOn.
The nature ofthis invention relates to cer tain new and usefulimprovements in locks for doors of that class which are actuated by a spindle with knobs upon the ends; and the invention consists in the peculiar manner of the construction and operation, with said lock, of an alarm-bell, as more fully hereinafter described.
v Figure 1 is a front View of a lock with one ofthe sides and the bell removed. Fig. 2 isa vertical section on the lineXXin Figui. Fig. 3 is a detail.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specitication, A represents the shell of the lock; and B, the bolt ofthe same, the free end of which projects through the side ofthe shell. The rear end of this bolt terminates in the two legs ct a, the free ends of which are turned up at right angles to the body thereof.
. wardly-projecting dog, c.
C is a hub; and the spindle of this hub is provided with two arms, b, as shown, the parts being so arranged that on turning the knob (not shown) on either side of the door to which the lock is attached in either direction it will withdraw the end of the bolt B within the case, allowing the` door to open. A spring, D, is employed to force the bolt outward on pressure being released from the knob and spindle. 'Ihe arm E is rigidly secured at one end to the bolt B, and its free end terminates in an in- (Shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
F is a bell of the gong character, secured within the shell ot' the lock. Gr is a stud, the small end d thereof being pivoted through one of the sides ot'` the shell. To this stud is secured the hammer I by means of the spring H, and this hammer is provided with two inclined faces, e andf, and in the face e is cut the notch (No model.)
which when the )arts arein place engages ga 7 l. a
with the dog c upon the end ofthe arm E. As the spindle is turned to Withdraw the latch this -dog c forces the spring and hammer backward until the spring has become so bent that t-he end ofthe dog c will pass ont ofthe notch, and strike against the inclined part of the `face c, which will raise the hammer I until the said inclined face e passes over the end of the dog and allows the hammer to strike the side of the bell. As the latch is projected by its spring after the knob is released, the end of the dog will pass up the inclined face F of the hammer, down the inclined face E, and reseat itself in the notch therein.
In order to so arrange the hammer that it will be inoperative when it is desired to use the lock without using the bell, Iarrange the parts as iollows The stud H has secured to it an arm, J, and to the free end of this arm is secured the shaft and screw-knob K, the shaft passing through the slot h in one of the sides of the shell, allowing the knob .to project on the outside of such shell, so that a movement of said knob to the opposite extremity of the slot will throw the hammer out ofthe reach of the arm projecting from the latch.
This alarm-lock will befoundvery usefifl upon doors, for instance, ot' bed-rooms, which can be entered when the parts are in position for operation without ringing the bell and disturbing theoccupant, while the ease with which the hell is thrown out of position leaves the lock unobjectionable for all purposes.
What I claim as my invention isl. The hammerI, having oppositely-inclined faces ef, and notch 1g/,hung 'upon a spring, H, combined with the arm E, having dog c, the
latch B,and spring D, as and for the purposes
