SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,435, dated August 24, 1880. Application led May 26, 1880. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, SYLVENDER F. MAY- NARD and HOMER N. PARKER, both of Leominster, in the county of' Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Fastening for Toys, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, mal:- ing part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of two upright toy ligures connected by a rod or wire, the limbs of each figure being united to its body by lneaus of our im proved fastenin gs. Fig. 2 represents a figure having a device applied to one of its eyelet-connections in order to whirl .the ligure thereon. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through one of the eyelets we employ.

Our present invention consists in the method of connecting the various limbs, members, or moving portions of toy iigures or blocks by means of eyelets, the parts being so united as to insure sufficient friction for retaining them in any desired position after adjustment, the openings in the eyelets serving as ready means by which separate figures or separate portions of the same ligure may be united by a wire, rod, or string, so as to render them capable of acting in unison.

Our invention also consists in the combinanation, with a toy ligure or block having its' portions united by eyelets, of a device having a handle provided with a rod or wire, the said device being designed for whirling the iigure thereon.

'Io enable others skilled in the art to understand and use our invention, we will proceed to describe the manner in which we have carried it out.

In the said drawings, A represents the body or trunk of a toy ligure of a gymnast or clown, to which are secured, by means of eyelets a a, the two legs b b and two arms, c c, one eyelet passing through both arms and the body and another cyelet passing through both legs and the body, the jointed connections thus formed having j ust sufticient friction to enable the limbs to remain in any desired position after adjustment. By the use of the eyelet a wire, rod, or string can be attached to the iigure with great facility, thus affording a ready connection with a horizontal bar or trapeze, or for uniting two figures, which, when loosely connected by a wire passing through their eyelets, may be moved independently of each other or of the connection between them, said figures acting simultaneously when `joined by a rigid connection formed by a rod having its ends pressed into the eyelet-openin gs with suf'- icient friction to hold them together.

The position of the toy when its limbs are united to the body by eyelets, is susceptible of an endless amount of changes. Tile eyeletconnection is cheaply applied, secure, and durable, and has a finished appearance, and a wire or string, d, provided with a handle, B, Fig. 2, is adapted to be passed through it to enable the toy to be swung around, thus affording a novel source of amusement.

In the drawings accompanying this application the gures are represented with their limbs or portions provided with hook-shaped projections. But this featureis not our invention 5 consequently we lay no claim thereto.

Furthermore, we are aware that Patent No. 172,709, dated January 25, 1876, describes and claims the limbs ot' toy ligures joined or connected by solid rivets and interposed friction- Washers, to which construction We therefore lay no claim.

We claiml. The limbs and other parts ot' a toy igure united by eyelets, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination, with a toy gure united by eyelets, of a rod, d, having a handle, B, on which the ligure is adapted to be whirled, as and for the purpose described.
