SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,972, dated September '7, 1880.

Application filed May 26, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. REED, of Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the aceompanyi ng drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of two upright toy figures of a clown connected by a rod, and having one of my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same figures in a sitting posture with the hook-shaped projections on the hands of each grasping a rod. Fig. 3 represents the figure with the hook shaped projection on its hat or head caught over the horizontal bar of a trapeze to enable it to swing thereon. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the figure supporting and balancing itself by means of a post rising from a pedestal.

My present invention consists in a toy figure provided with a hook-shaped projection upon its hand, foot, hat, head, or some por tion of arm, leg, or body, whereby the figure may be hung or swung upon a rod or bar to imitate the various positions and evolutions of a gymnast.

My invention also consists in a post or standard rising from a base or pedestal for supportin the figure of a toy or block, in imitation of a performer in the act of leaping or balancing, the top of the post being so shaped as to admit of its ready introduction between the contiguous limbs or portions, which are separated a short distance to form a space for this purpose.

To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use myinveution, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.

In the said drawings, A represents the body or trunk of a toy figure, to which the arms a a and legs b b are secured by eyelets or tubular rivets c c, the jointed connections thus formed possessing just sufficient friction to enable the limbs to remain in any desired position after adjustment.

The abovedescribed fastening-name] y, the eyelet or tubular rivet-forms no part of my invention, being claimed by Sylvender F. Maynard and Homer N. Parker, who have filed their application for patent therefor simultaneously with my present application.

the extremity of each foot, leg, hand, arm, hat, or head of the toy figures, to enable them to be hung and swung on a horizontal bar, B, in various positions and made to go through many evolutions practiced by gymnastic performers, (see Fig. 3,) the hook-shaped projections don the hands being represented in Fig. 2 grasping a rod, 0. p

c, Fig. 4, represents a post or standard rising from a base or pedestal, D, the upper end of the post being square or other suitable form in cross-section to admit of its ready introduction within the space between any two contiguous limbs or portions, such as the two arms or two legs of the figure, in which position it imitates a 1'ierformerin the act of balancing or leapin It is evident that other portions of a figure or object than those above named may be pro vided with hook'shaped projections 01, when desired to attach them together or to any other object, without departing from my inventiou.

A toy figure of a doll, animal, or bird constructed in accordance with the features of my invention is cheap, durable, of finished and attractive appearance, and affords lasting amusement for the young.

I am aware that Patent No.14et,651 shows a hook on thefoot of a toy-gymnastfigure; but no reference is made to this feature in the description of the same, and it does not appear to be thus constructed for the same purpose as the hooked projection on the hat, head, hand, arm, leg, or foot of my within-described toy figure.

I claim- 1. The arm, leg, hand, foot, hat, head, or other member or portion of a toy figure or block, in combination with a hooked projection for grasping or catching over a bar, rod, or string, by which it may be supported, or on which it may be swung, or for uniting two or more figures together, substantially as described.

2. In combination withthe contiguous limbs, members, or portions of a toy figure or block, a post or standard for supporting the same in various positions, substantially as set forth.
