TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,604, dated June 3, 1884. Application filed April 14, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JESSE G. WEBB, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Toys, of which. the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved toy; Fig. 2, a like view showing the side opposite to that shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a bottom plan view.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawin s.
%Iy invention relates to that class of toys which are designed to be wheeled or trundled; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more 'fully set forth and claimed, by which a very simple, cheap, and amusing article of this character is produced.
The nature and operation of the invention will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation, its extreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.
In the drawings, A represents the body or handle, B the pitman, and O the truck or wheel. The wheel is made fast on a crankshaft, D, which is journaled at w in the body A. A ratchet-wheel, E, is attached to the side of the wheel 0, and also secured on the shaft D, the ratchet being provided with the spring-pawl H, the free end of which presses on its teeth, its opposite end being'secured to the body A at m. The pitman-rod B is jointed to the crank at Z, its opposite end being provided with an elongated slot, h, through which aheaded stud or pin, t, projects.
' Mounted on the bodyA there are two images,
J K, representing goats butting or fighting. The heads of these images are jointed to their bodies at z, and connected to the pitman B by the links or levers a b. The lower end of the lever a is jointed to the end of the pitman B at v, and its upper end to the head of the image K at a point below its pivot z, and farther from the wheel 0 than said pivot. The lower end of the lever 11 is jointed to the pitman B and its upper end to the head of the image J 'at a point below its pivot z, and nearer to the wheel 0 than said last-named pivot.
In the use of my improvement the handle or body A is taken in the hand and the wheel Opushed or trundled along the ground, causing the pawl H to pass over the teeth of the ratchet-wheel E with a loud noise resembling that produced by a watchmans rattle. As the wheel 0 is trundled along the ground the pitman B will be worked back and forth on the stud 23, causing the heads of the images J K to be alternately raised and depressed in unison, as though butting or fighting.
I do not confine myself to the use of an imageor images mounted on the body A and so arranged as to be moved or actuated by the pitman, as these may be omitted entirely, if desired; or an image or images of any other kind than those shown may be substituted, if desired.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a toy Substantially such as described, the image K, mounted on the body A and pro- .vided with a pivoted head, in combination with the jointed lever a, and arranged to be operated by the pitman B and'wheel 0, substantially as set forth.
2. In a toy substantially such as described, the image J, provided with a pivotedhead and mounted on the'body A, incombination with the j ointed lever Z), and arranged to be operated by the pitman B and wheel 0, substantially as specified.
3. In atoy substantially such as described, the images J K, provided with movable or pivoted heads, and arranged to face each other on the body A, in combination with the jointed levers a b, pitman B, ratchet-wheel E, spring-pawl H, and wheel O,substantially as set forth.
JESSE G. WEBB.
