G STREOKER 4 FOOT PROPELLED EH CLE;
(No Mddel.)
* "U ITED STATES PATENT OFFIC cnonen STRECKER, or c rome, ILLINOIS.. j
, FOOT-'PRQPELLED VE HlCL EL SPEOIFIQATION forming part ofvLetters Patent No. -oo5,o2s, dated May 31, 1898. Application filed August 14. 1897. Serial No. 648,290. on model.)
To all whom it may concern: 3
Be it known that I, GEORGE STRECKER, of Chicago, in'the county of Cook-and State of Illinois, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Propelled Vehicles; and I do hereliy declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart' to which it appertains to. make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in foot-propelled vehicles, and has'special reference to that class whichis actuated by the rocking of the body. i
A further object of the invention is to so construct and arrange the parts as-to' give a life-like motion to the animals constituting the rocking body.
The'invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter described in-the specification, particularly pointed out in the'claims, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aperspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation, and Fig. 4 shows a modification.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
1' indicates the body, which is formed like the ordinary shoo-fly, the sides of which may be formed intothe shape of any particular I animal desired.
2 indicates the crank-pins, having the central crank portions 3, which extend oppositely, as illustrated.
4 are-the wheels, ,which are secured to the crank-pins, while the body is loosely mounted upon said pins, the latter passing loosely through the legs .of the animal.
5 isa reach or balance rod-which is loosely mounted at one end upon the crankportion of the rear pin, and on its opposite end is formed with a slot 6,- in which the crank portion of the front pin freely moves. This rod or reach serves to retain the cranks in. the same relation to each other as the crank-pins are revolved.
The wheels are weighted so that, they are' balanced, and a child seated in the body by rocking back and forth causes the front and rear .ends of the body to'rise and. fall alternately and at the same time propel the vehicle, and the animals move in a very life-like manner. The child seated in .the body may propel the same by pressingwit his feet upon a balance-rod, as will be understood.
' In Fig. 4-Lhave shown a structure by which the front wheels are permitted to turn. In'
thisconstruction a plate 113, resembling 'one of the plates of the fifth-wheel-of a wagon, is
journaled upon the front pin,.while above the said plate is a corresponding plate 14,
upon which the figure rests. If so desired, a'
rod '15 can be rigidly secured to the plate 13 and passed through the upper plate, said rod being provided with a cross-bar 16, by means 1 of which the front pin can be tamed by the rider.
I do not limit myself to the particular form of rocking body, asthe same may be .in the representation of many different kinds of animals; nor do I limit myself to the use of the device for propelling the shoo-fly, as it may be manufactured as a toy to be moved across the floor by a child.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a series of wheels and crank-pins on the inner sides thereof, of a body loosely mounted upon said pins, and a connection between thecrank portions of the pinshaving a sliding engageme t with one of said crank portions, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a'series of wheels, of crank-pins having their crank portions disposed oppositely, a body loosely mounted upon said pins, and a reach-rod connecting the crank portions of the pins, and having'a limited sliding movement thereon, substantially asset forth.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a series of wheels, of
emnk-pinsconnecting said wheels in pairs, .1 specification in the presence of two subscribhody loosely mounted thereon, and a red ing witnesses.
loosely connected at one end to the crank w v H portion of one of said pins and slotted at its GEORGE g1 RECRER' opposite end to receive the crank portion of \Vitnesses:
the opposite pin, substantially as set forth. F. 0. AUGUST MEYER,
In testimony whereof I have signed this A. E. GEISLEER.
