PATENT. OFFICE.
GEORGE s. PORTER, on NEW YQRK, N. Y.-
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTONS STUDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 173,998, dated February 22, 1876; application filed January 11, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE S. PORTER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in (luff-Buttons and Studs, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- 1 Figure 1 represents an inverted plan view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side view.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
, My invention relates to certain improvements in the means for affixing buttons to cuffs; and consists in a series of radial arms, which are rigidly attached to the shanks ot' the buttons in such a manner that a facile and secure means is obtained for affixing the but-' thus to cufis, while, moreover, an economy in material is effected, as hereafter more fully explained.
' In the drawing, the letter A designates a cuff-button made according to my invention. This button may be made of any selected form, and it is provided with a shank, B. To the outer end of this shank B are attached a series of arms, a, which extend in a radial direction to the button and atright angles to the shank, while they are rigidly attached to the shank. The radial arms are in this example three in number, but two, three, or more may be used, if seen fit. These radial arms a are adapted to be adjusted in the button-hole of a cuff with great facility, and hence the button-A can be readily aifixed to the cuff, and, moreover, but a small quantity of material is needed to form the arms acompared with that used for forming the old form of disks, in lieu of which the radial arms are. used.
It is obvious that when the button is made of gold or other precious metal, the saving efl'ected through the radial arms is not insignificant.
My invention is applicable to shirt-studs as well as cuff-buttons, and to buttons for various other purposes.
What I claim-as new, and desire to secure 7 by Letters Patent, isr A cuff-button, A, having two or more radial arms, a, which are rigidly attached to the shank of the 'button, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 6th day of January, 1876.
. GEO. S. PORTER. [L. SJ]. Witnesses:
W. HAUFF, 'E. F. KASTENHUBER.
