" Boon SUPPORT Application led February 9, 1928. Serial No. 253,034.
One of the important purposes of this invention is to provide a book-supporting device having means for detachably fastening it to the back member of a book-cover and which. device includes relatively foldable elements capable of lying in compact relation against said back member when not in use as a support for the book.
Another of the important purposes of the l0 invention is to provide a book-supporting device having means for detachably fastening it to the back member of a book-cover and which device comprises relatively foldable elements which,`when in their opened relation, will relievethe user of the book from the burden of holding the lat-terin a standing position at the rearward inclination which renders inspection or reading of the contents of the book most convenient,
Still another of the important purposes of this invention is to provide a book-supporting device which is characterized in'that while it has means for detachably fastening it to the back member of the book-cover and requires no substantial change in thecon-` struction ofthe book-cover itself, yet may re-y main in itsattached relation to the bookcover and while so attached will not in any wise interfere with the storage of the book il) in an upright or in a horizontal position in a book-case or otherplace of storage and will not require any substantial additional space for such storage and will not interfere with the use of the book in a horizontal position. Other purposes ofthe invention will be apparent from the following description of the preferred embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings. said drawings f Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an' opened book of loose-leaf binder nature supported in open position by a device constructed in accordance with this invention. y
Fig. 2 is a'sectional view longitudinally r through the back part of a book and the book supporting device applied thereto, and showing the members of said device in closed relation. f y
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2, on a larger scale.
Fig. 4 is a detail representation showing a book equipped with said device, in open position upon a horizontal support, thebook supporting device being closed.
Fig. 5 is a side view on a much larger scale than the preceding figures, showing a part of the rear end of a book and the members of the 'book supporting device in relative positions they may occupy while the device is beipg applied to or removed from thebook,
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the book support in partly open position.
The supporting device constituting this invention is preferably but not exclusively applicable to book-covers of loose-leaf binder nature. A desirable form of such cover, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, comprises lids A and A having their rear longitudinal ends connected with each other by a flexible back member B 'and having spaced `strips C, C between which the back mem-` bers 10 of loose leaves D are arranged and detachably secured by appropriate fastening elements `which extend through said strips .y
C, C and members 10. The preferred construction ofeach fastening element shown in detail in Fig. 3, comprises two telescopically arranged members, one of which has an internally threaded socket 11 and the other an externally threaded stem 12 to screw into said socket. These members extend through appropriateholes formed in the strips C, C and inthe members 10 of the leaves D and have their outer ends provided with heads 13 and 14, respectively, to lie against the outer surfaces of the strips C, C. kThe members 10 are .flexibly secured to the body portions of the respective leaves D along their forward longitudinal edges to permit the leaves to be turned relatively to said members.
The supporting device comprises two legs,
, marked F and G, respectively. The log F lies closely against the outer surface of the backmember B of the book-cover. These leg'sare hingedly connected lwith each other, as shownk at .15, at one end of the device and 'are so correlated that when the device is in folded condition, shown in Figs.r 2 and 3, the
lll
strap H is fastened, preferably permanently, at one of its ends (its upper end in the illustrated embodiment) to the corresponding end of the leg F and is of such length that it Will extend thence over the adjacent end of the back member B of the cover and through the space between theinner surface of said back member and the rear edges of the back members l of the leaves and thence around the adjacent edge of said baclr member B and back to the leg F to which latter its corresponding end is detachably secured, preferably by mating fastening elements 1G, 16', respectively attached to the leg F and end of the strap H. ln practice, itis preferred tc form that part of the strap which is to lie Within the space between the rear edges of the members l0 of the leaves andthe baclr B of the cover, of stiff material and to provide iiexible end extensions or tabs it, 7L therefrom to extend over the opposite ends of the bach members B, one of said extensions or tabs, as z. being of such length thatit will also extend over the corresponding end of the leg F and alongside the inner surface of said leg. The stiff portion of the body is of substantially the same length as the bach member B of the book-cover and of a thickness and Width which enables it substantially to fill the space between the rear edges of the leavesmembers l0 and said member B. lt thus serves to give rigidity to the baclr of the bool; to Which it is attached and in every Way forms a mostdesirable means for effecting a lirm and secure, and yet detachable, connection of the leg F to the book.
rlhe supporting device is completed by a brace member l, of suitable construction. The illustrated brace member has its body formed of substantial material with flexible extensions z', z" from its opposite ends. @ne of these extensions, as c' is preferably permanently secured to the leg F, While the other, has means or an element of means, for lct-achably securing it to the leg G-the'illusated means for this purpose being of glove "astening nature, comprising tivo mating iembers i7 and 1S, respectively, secured to h leg Gr and tab i and adapted to inter-engage When the legsl41 and G are in their open relation to thereby hold the legs against accidental displacement from their said folded relation. The member 1'?, which is attached to the leg G, is also adapted to inter-engage a mating fastening element 19 on the leg F,
regi-a to thereby detachably secure the correspond-k relation of theelements of the support when the latter is folded.
