LOOSE-LEAF CHECK BOOK AND FLEXIBLE BINDER THEREFOR.
Application led June 2, 1923. Serial No. 642,885. i
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM VVAN Nos- TRAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sea Cliff, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have made a certain new and useful invention in Loose-Leaf Check Books and Flexible Binders Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to flexible loose leaf binders which are designed and especially adapted for check books and folios where it is desirable to have the pages of the folio open and fall back so as to lie flat.
By providing means whereby this result is readily accomplish, I have solved the vexed question of providing check books, ledgers and the like, wherein the leaves will fall back, and lie flat on the table for ease of writing, and for other purposes.
The object of my invention, therefore, includes the provision of means whereby the leaves in a loose leaf folio may be flexibly and elastically held, and whereby the pages of said folio will fall back and lie Hat on the desk or table.
Another object includes the provision of iexible binder members which are readily and economically applied, and which will operate with the book backing to facilitate ready opening.
Further objects will appear hereinafter, and I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, inwhich- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a check book having applied thereto a construction involving the principles of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on lines 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 8 is an elevation showing the application of my invention with several of the leaves of the book partially opened, and
Fig. 4 is a side View of a loose leaf book having applied thereto my invention, wherein the leaves are in a position to drop down flat and open.
Similar numerals refer to like parts throughout the several units.
It is one of the prime objects of my invention to provide easy means whereby it is possible to open any number of pages in a loose leaf book or ledger so that these pages will fall open and lie flat, thus affording a flat surface on which to write.
I accomplish this object by providing a number of perforations 10, 10 near the edge of the leaves of the book, to be assembled, and in these perforations I apply aflexible binder member 11. This binder` member may consist of a flexible tube of a suitable length of rubber hose, or the like, near the ends of which are provided lock keys 12, 13 for holding the leaves assembled. These keys are preferably flat and of sucient length to secure the leaves in position. In place of the rubber tubing, it is obvious that any other suitable flexible or flexible and elastic member may be employed and the leaves and holding members are held assembled by suitable keys. In some instances I prefer to have the keys 12 and 13 also of flexible material and preferably flat, thereby facilitating the assembly.
If it is desired to cover the book with a backing, a backing member 14 is supplied with perforations 15, and assembled with the Vloose leaves 16 of the bookor folder.
The entire folder may be covered with a suitable outer covering 17, which may be.
glued or fastened to the backing in any suitable manner. A supporting member 18 may be provided for guiding the edge of the leaves as they are opened to prevent binding and breaking.
, With this construction it is apparent that the book or folder may be opened at any position, and the leaves turned back so as to assume a flat position. There is no strain on the leaves because of the flexibility of the binding members, and where an elastic member is employed, it is possible to increase the folder as desired.
These features are of a considerable advantage over the usual ring form of binder, as will readily appear to those versed in the art.
Having now described my invention and applied the same in a practical manner; Y
what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a loose leaf check book, the combination with a plurality of independent leaves, a backing for said leaves, said leaves and backing being provided with a plurality of perforations, flexible elastic means in said perforations and keys projecting through said means near the ends thereof and bearing against the backing for quick assembly and for holding said leaves and backing in assembled position. n
2. A loose leaf check book comprising a Nr OFFICE- plurality of independent leaves and a backing therefor, said leaves and backing being provided With a plurality of perforations therethrough, round elastic members extending through said perforations and flat keys in said members near their ends for quick assembly and for holding the leaves and backing in assembled position.
3. A loose leaf cheek book comprising a plurality of independent leaves and a backing therefor, said leaves and backing being provided With a plurality of perforations, substantially straight round elastic members in said'perforations, said members extending beyond the outer surface of the backing, iat keys extending transversely through said members for holding said leaves and backing in assembled position, thereby permitt-ing ready assembly of the book and also permitting the leaves to fall open in a flattened position.
4. A binding member for uniting a plurality of perforated loose leaves to form a book wherein the leaves Will fall open at any page, Which includes tubular, flexible and substantially straight elastic binding niembers extending through said perforations and a transverse flat locking member near each end of said binding members for readily assembling said leaves and for permitting said leaves to lie open fiativise.
ln testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand on this 28th day of May A. D., 1923.
ABRAHAM VAN NOSTRAND.
