Description

'1. OR'I'ON.
INDEX CLIP BOARD.
Patented Dec. 21, 1875.
ATTURNE? N.PEIERS. PHOTO UTHDG UNITED S'IA'IES PATENT OFFICE,
THOMAS ORTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN INDEX CLIP-BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 71,4 15, dated December 21, 1875; application filed August 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS ORTON, of Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Index Clip-Board, of which the following is a specification The nature of my invention consists in the construction of an index, and of an apparatus for holding the same in place, to be applied on any ordinary spring or screw clip-board, and, when so applied, forms a novel and valuable file for holding papers, and, at the same time, for classifying or arranging them alphabetically.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a clip board or file embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows one of the indexsheets, and Fig. 3 is a view of one of the devices for holding said sheets.
A represents an ordinary clip-board, with clip B fastened thereon, constructed in any of the known and usual ways. At each end of the clip B, or at or near the upper and lower corners of the base-board A, are fastened brackets O 0, through each of which is passed a vertical rod, D, the same being held in place by a screw-thread cut in the shank thereof, which fits a corresponding screw cut in the upper plate of the brackets O C. These brack ets or their form are not essential, as the vertical rods D D may be fastened to the baseboard A by passing through it, or may be otherwise attached to any form of the clip used. The rods D D may be placed back of theline of gripe of the clip, so as to pass through the back edges or ends of index-sheets and permit the papers placed on file to pass under the clip and be held by it; or they may be placed so wide asunder at the sides of baseboard A that papers to be filed can pass between the rods and under the clip. G G represent the index sheets, in the end or side edges of which are fastened ordinary eyelets b b, or their equivalents, and the rods or posts are passed through said eyelets. The sheets G G are marked with appropriate letters, or
are otherwise designated.
Letters Patent, is.
1. A series of index-sheets, provided at their inner edge with eyelets, and held to a'clipboard by one or more rods passing through the eyelets, in combination with a clip, said clip clasping the sheets in front of the rods, thereby firmly holding the contents of the clip in place, substantially as shown and described.
I 2. The combination of the clip-board A and clip B with the rods D, held by brackets (J, or equivalent means, and index-sheets Gr, having eyelets b, or their equivalents, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I hereunto affix my signature.
