JOHN s; BLANKMAN, or DENVER, oo LonAno.
FILE-HOLDER C R TEMPORARY BINDER.
SPEGIFICATIdN forming part. of Letters Patent No. '284, 534, dated September 4, 1883 Application filed July 25, 1883. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern/.- 7
. Be it known that I, J. SERGEANT BLANK- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Bind-.
ers or File-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in temporary binders or file-holders for documents andpapers of various descriptions; and it has for its objects to bind and hold such articles compactly, and allow the same to be readily handled when required for reference or other purposes, as more fully hereinafter specified; and, further, to provide for cutting In the drawings, the letter A indicates the base of my improved binder or file-holder,
which is preferably made of .pasteboard, but which may be made of any other suitable material. l i
To the base A, at its rear end, is secured the 7 frame B- by means of rivets, solder, or other means usually employed in fastening sheet metal together. The said frame is preferably constructed of sheet metal, although it may be constructed of wire, and is provided with vertical slots 0, and at its front edges with, inclined notches or slots D, for the purpose hereinafter specified.
The letter E indicates a transverse strip, of suitable material, constructed to receive, when required, a sheet of metal or other suitable material, F, which is adapted to; bear upon the documents or papers to be bound or held. Above the said strip, and connected to it, is a transverse bar, G, which is adapted to operate in connection with the frame above mentioned, as more fully hereinafter specified. The said bar, as indicated in the drawings, at each end is bent or formed with loops D, which serve to embrace that portion of the frame between the Vertical slot and the slots or, notches'at the edges, andat the same time it can be moved vertically upon the frame and be secured in any desirable position therein, as more fully hereinafter specified.
V The sides of the frame are provided, as before mentioned, with inclined notches or slots D, in which the looped ends of the transverse bar may be made to engage, as more fully hereinafter specified.
The transverse bar has projecting ends, which are connected to the ends of a spring, I, which may be of rubber or other suitable material, extending under the base of the device, or of elastic wire, secured to the sides of the frame before mentioned.
The frame and base may be constructed in 1 the transverse strip normally upon the papers or documents and clamp them to the base of the device, and permit them, when required, to be partially relieved of the pressure, so as to be conveniently handled! a When it is desired to cut off or separate any of the bound sheets or documents, the object may be effected by tearing the same against the forward edge of the transverse strip, the bearing.-plate F being removed.
In this connection it will be seen that when the bearing plate F is removed the device operats as a. temporary binder.
The operation of my invention will be read ily understood in connection with the above verse plate is elevated and shifted, so as to bring the forward ends of the loops of the transverse bar attached thereto into the slots D at the opposite sides of the frame B, so as to permit the papers or documents to be conveniently raised.
It will be observed that the upper edges of 100 the frame are beveled from the front to the rear, downward, so as to permit the binding- When the papers or docuplate tobe raised to a suitable angle, and be 7 shown, and also the frame.
stopped by the inwardly downward turned flanges s s. 1
It is evident that the general form of the device may be very different from what I have might be made in one piece, or integral, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1. In afile-holder or temporary binder, the combination, with the base, of a slotted -and notched frame, a transversebar provided at its ends with loops, and having attached thereto a transverse strip, and a spring arranged relatively to said bar and strip, substantially as set forth. v
The bar and strip ed to be removably secured to said strip, sub
stantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN S. BLANKMAN. \Vitnesses:
CHAS. D. DAVIS, H. J. ENNIs.
