AUGUSTUS S. BUNKER, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,028, dated February 13,1883. 7
Application filed March 22. 1882. (ModeL) Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is an under plan view; and Fig. 3 is a section of the same, taken through the line at m, Fig. 2.
This invention relates to devices for temporarily filing or binding bills, letters, or other similar papers which are wanted for ready reference, and in which one or more such papers may be readily removed when needed without disengaging the others that may be on file.
The invention refers more particularly to that class of devices in which two stationary ing, in connection with two curved swinging wires, to hold and retain the letters, bills, or other papers, the swinging wires being connected bya cross-bar and held in the position placed by a spring bearing on said bar, the swinging wires working through elongated openings formed in the base-plate.
It is the object of the invention to improve the construction of the above-mentioned class of binders; and it consists in the details of construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a flat base-plate, cast with an eye at its top for the purpose of hanging the same against a wall or desk, if so'desired, and with a rim, a, around its edges. This plate is'also provided with slots b, through which work lugs 0, cast with a lever-bar, B, which is formed with a beveled shoulder, g, to act against the fulcrums h on the under side of the base-plate, said lever-bar working above and controlled by a spring or springs, (l, secured by a screw and washer to projections d, this lever being prevented from slipping by a stop, 0.
The requisite amount of tension is given to the springs (J by means of a cross-plate, D,
which is caused to bear upon said springs with a greater or less degree by a suitable screw passing through it and the base-plate.
Suitably connected to the lugs c of the lever-bar B are wires E, the upper ends of which are curved or arched and brought to a point to engage with the beveled ends of the tubular upright standards F, connected to the baseplate for the purpose of receiving the papers intended to be filed. These standards are made tubular, in order that a cord may be passed through them, with which to secure the file of papers when removed from the binder.
When a paper is desired to be placed on file the curved wires connected to the lugs upon the lever bar, as heretofore described, are swung back and the said paper placed upon the upright tubular standards, when the curved wires are brought back,'their points engaging with the beveled ends of the standards, thereby preventing the paper from becoming disengaged or working 05.
.When a paper on file is needed for reference those placed upon the standards subsequently to the one desired are pushed up on the curved swinging wires, and the whole swung back out of the way to allow of its removal, the pressure of the springs upon the angular corner of the lever-bar holding the swinging wires firmly in this position until brought back against the beveled standards.
Having now fully described myinvention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a temporary binder, the base-plate A,
cast with rim a, openings b, and fulcrums h p and stop 0, said base having secured thereto the standards F, in combination with the wires E, connected to lugs c, the lever-bar B,formed with bevel-shoulder g, the springs C, and adjusting cross-bar I), all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence two witnesses.
AUGUSTUS S. BUNKER.
