Description

JQ PLMcLEAN & W. F. BEDDING.
. BILL-FILES.
No.184,045. Patented Nov. 7,1876.-
UNITED STATES PATENT JAMES P. MGLEAN AND WILLIAM F. BEDDING, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.,
ASSIGNOBS TO SAID BEDDING.
IMPROVEMENT IN BILL-FILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,045, datedNovember 7, 1876; application filed July 24, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES P. MOLEAN and WILLIAM F. BEDDING, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain novel and useful Improvements in Bill- Files, with or without indexing the same, and for out-door sketching, writing, and other purposes; and we hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are lettered to correspond with and form a part of the specification.
To enable those skilled in the mechanic arts to construct and operate the same. and the public to understand the nature thereof, we
will describe it as follows, to wit:
Figure l is a top view of the board A, showing the pressure-bar B in the open ways W W secured to the board A at each side thereof.
0 (J are cords or straps of any suitable teria-l secured at each end of the pressure-bar B, and passing under the table or boardA, to .connect with any suitable opera ting pressure spring or springs. P Pare guard-plates to keep the pressure-bar B in position when bein g raised or lowered by the action of the hand and spring under the board A, and to receive the top ends of the operating straps O O.
The looped rod B B serves as a stop or gage to prevent the bills from slipping too far through the file when the pressure-bar B is raised to place the bills in position upon the fasteners n n. This looped, rod B, being detached from the other working parts of our machine, may be removed when it becomes necessary, and the sliding plates f f, with the pointed paper fasteners 10. n, may also be removed without disarranging the other working parts of our device, by simply drawing the plates f f from under the staples o 0 for indexing, writing, and drawing purposes without perforating said paper or bills.
For binding purposes We employ a suitable number of straps, s s, having one end of each strap passed over the fasteners n n, and under the bills and bar B, while the other or loose ends of said binding-straps are passed through the back of any suitable cover to secure the bills within the same in a durable manner, by means of any suitable fasteners Fig. 2 is a bottom View of Fig. 1, showing the board A, pressurestrapsO (J, spring or springs H H, guard-plates P P secured to the ends of the bar B. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of Fig. 1, showing the open ways W, inclined bed or table A, pressure'bar B, guards P, straps 0, spring H.
The bar B is raised through the vertical openings W, and rests in the horizontal sections of the same at W, Fig. 3, until the bills are placed over the points of the fasteners n n, Fig. 1, when the pressurebar B is carried back into the position shown in the drawings by the force of the spring or springs H H under the bottom or board A suitably arranged, as shown at Fig. 2, which represents the bottom side of the clip or file board A, provided with a flat or round wound spring, H, to 0perate the bar B, Fig. l, in its vertical or horizontal movement, substantially as above set forth.
The novelty of our joint invention consists in the construction of a bill file or clip,'of wire or other material, in such a manner that the same may be used in combination with an in: dex and binding cover, or otherwise, and may be employed 'for writing or drawing with or without perforating the several layers of paper; therefore,
What we claim as novel and useful, and wish to protect by Letters Patent of the Unite States, is-- The combination of the pressure-bar B, provided with guards P P and straps O (J, with the open ways W, spring or springs H, looped rod or gagebar B, fasteners n n, and sliding plates ff, for the purposes substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we hereunto subscribe our names in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES P. MOIIEAN. WILLIAM F. BEDDING.
Witnesses:
