NrrED STATES JOSEPH n. HALE, OF- BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TEMPORARY BINDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,5 [7, dated March 9,1875; application filed August 18, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPHN. HALE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Letter Clips and Binders, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to that class of combined paper clips and binders in which papers, letters, music, or other sheets may be temporarily held and filed, or be permanently bound together, as may be desired, by means of the ordinary T-fastener, as will be hereinafter set forth.
The invention consists in constructing the lower jaw or baseplate with recesses to re ceive and hold the heads of the fasteners, said lower jaw being longitudinally slotted and supported thereon by washers at each end to admit of the passage between the said plate and jaw of a bifurcated slip for holding the fasteners in position, and an upper movable jaw attached to pivoted arms having a thumb-lever acted upon by a spring for clamping the papers between said jaws, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2, a detached view of the lower jaw, its slotted plate, and supporting-washers; and Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of Fig. 1.
A represents the base-board, to which the lower jaw B of the clip is secured by means of screws, rivets, or otherwise. 0 represents the upper jaw of the clip, pivoted to standards b on the lowerjaw, as shown. Both the upper and lower. jaws are made of metal, and are provided with thumb-levers B C, by means of which they may be separated. The spring D, attached to the lower jaw and bearing against the lever of the upper jaw, keeps the two tightly closed upon the paper when inserted. At the front edge of the lower jaw are two or more slotted plates, E E, resting upon washers e e at each end, and securely fastened to the lower jaw by means of rivets or otherwise.
The slots through said plates are parallel with the front edge of the lower jaw, and are of sufficient size to admit the head of the largest T-fastener in use. Directly below the slot in each plate a similar slot is formed,
provided with a plate arms (3, thumb-lever B,
which serves as a recess to hold the head of the fastener. F represents a bifurcated slip of metal, of such size as to slide readily under the plates E. The slot in the end is preforably made V-shaped. One of these slips is provided for each plate E, and serves to hold the T- fastener securely in place when inserted. The V-shaped slots in the plates bind the arms of the fastener together, so that it will readily penetrate the paper. Just to the rear of the plates, and in a line parallel with them, Iarrange a series of guides, G, for the paper. Along the front edge of the upper jaw of the clip, over each plate E, I form the slots or openings H, through which the ends of the fasteners project when the jaws are together.
In using my improved clip and binder, the jaws are first separated and a T- fastener dropped through each slotted plate. The. head will fall into the slot in the lower jaw and rest upon the baseboard. A bifurcated slip is then inserted under each plate, so that the forks will embrace the fastener and bind the two arms of the same together. The upperjaw being still raised, the edge of the paper is pushed up against the guides G, and the jaws are then closed. The spring will force the paper down over the fasteners and hold it securely in position, thus temporarily filing or binding the papers. When they are to be permanently bound the ends of the fasteners are bent over, as is usual, and, after Withdrawing the slip F, the sheets may be readily removed, as is apparent.
I claim-- The lower jaw B, slotted as shown, to form recesses for the heads of the fasteners, and the slotted plate E, supported upon the lower jaw by the interposed Washers c, in combination with the bifurcated slip F for holding the fasteners, and the slotted movable jaw H, and a spring, D, all constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown, for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
