IMPROVEMENT IN BED-LOUNGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,289, dated August 3, 1875; application filed May 28, 1875.

To all whom z't may concern Be it known that I, ABRAHAM MORRIS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bed-Lounge, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved bed-lounge opened for use as a bed, with head-piece attached; and Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, showing combined guard-rail and legs of folding section.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

My invention relates to an improved bedlounge, which is provided with a side or guard rail and legs, that are, simultaneously with the opening or folding of the section, carried into the required position in a very convenient manner.

The invention consists of a side or guard rail pivoted to the extended legs swinging therewith. The guard-rail supports also by guide-groove, in connection with a face-strip of the main head-piece, the detachable headpiece of the folding section.

In the drawing, A represents the main section of my bed-lounge, and B the folding section, which is hinged thereto in the customary manner, to be swung into open or folded position, as required. The legs 0 are pivoted to the front piece of section B, so as to swing down when the section is opened, their vertical position being defined and secured by stop-pins a. The legs G are extended to suitable height above the pivot-pins, and connected by a longitudinal side or guard rail, D, that is pivoted thereto. The guard-rail D swings with the legs down on the front piece, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, when the bed is folded up, and admits the almost instant throwing in position of the legs and rail on opening the hinged section for use as a bed. The guard-rail is carried up to such height that it forms a side board for the hinged section. The detachable head-piece E is placed in position when the hinged section is thrown open, and the guard-rail and legs are turned up. The head-piece E rests on a raised inclined strip, b, at the front part of the head-piece of the main section, and in a guide-groove, d, formed by guide pieces 0 of the guard-rail. The lower edge of the headpiece bears, by means of a recess, on the corner of the hinged section, and is thus held firmly in position, while looking, at the same time, the guard-rail, so that no accidental folding or changing of the same is possible.

The legs, guardrail, and head-piece work in ready and convenient manner, and give a bed-lounge of simple, strong, and durable c011- struction.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The hinged section of a bed-lounge, provided with pivoted upward-extended legs, and a connecting guard-rail pivoted thereto, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the detachable headpiece of the hinged section with a raised strip of the main head-piece and the grooved end of the guard-rail, as described, for securing rigid position of head-piece and guard-rail, substantially as specified.
