FOLDING 00T BED. No. 353,943. Patented Den. 7, 1886.
N. PETERS. Phnm-Lnmgmpher. wnsnmgmn, D. C.
EDWARD .E. HERRINTON AND HENRY C. RUSSELL, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.
FOLDING COT-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,943, dated December '7, 1886.
Application filed March 2l, 1885. Serial No. 159,677.
To all whom it ita'y concern.'
Be it known that we, EDWARD E. HEREIN- ToN and HENRY G. RUssELL, both citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, havejointly invented ecrtain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cot-Beds, of which the following is a specification. ro Our invention relates to a cot-bed with legs and braces which fold to the side rails, and the objects of our invention are, first, to so forni the side rails that not only the legs and braces, but the cloth, may be folded within the two rails; second, to securely attach the edges of the cloth to the side rails; and, third, to hold the cot in position by means of adjusta ble braces which can be used to tighten the cloth which forms the bed-bottom. These objects we accomplish by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an inverted plan View of the cot, showing the method of attaching the folding leg to the side rail and the construction of the side rails. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the same on line as x of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 a perspective View ofthe folded cot.
Similar letters referto similar parts throughout the several views.
G represents the side rails, which We make either of one piece of wood hollowed ont, as shown in Fig. 2, or which can be made of Veneers bent into the proper shape. Ve have experimented with both forms, and as great lightness is required veneer side rails are preferable.
A is the leg, provided with the hinge D, so that it may be folded down into the hollow of the side rail, as shown in Fig. l.
L is a brace, which holds the leg A in position when the legis unfolded, as shown in Fig. 2. One end of the brace L is attached to the Side rail by journal E, as shown in Fig. l.
F is the socket'head of brace L.
C is a stationary socket.
ct is a round leg which is pressed into the socket C.
The brace L is connected to the leg A at one 5o end and at the other end to the side rail, G, so
that the brace can readily be detached and folded into the rail.
(No model.)
B is a portion of the lateral track attached to the leg A and a portion of the lateral brace attached tothe side rail. Band Hare attached together by' the sleeve Lso as to forni one brace, which may be extended or contracted. The object of this adj ustability is to enable the user of the cot to strain the cloth K at pleasure. W'hen folded, the part B remains attached to theleg A and the part H to the crossbrace J. The brace J extends from the leg on one side rail to the leg on the other side rail, and is detachable.
In attaching the cloth to the side rail we use a wire, M, sewed in or otherwise attached to the edge of the cloth, and then by means of nails or other suitable means attach the cloth to the inside ofthe side rail, as shown in Fig. 2. The use of the Wire may be dispensed with and other means used, if desired.
Vhen the cot is folded, the legs, braces. and cloth are all folded within the side rails, so that the whole presents the appearance of a rod or beam, as shown in Fig. 3. When the 75 cot is folded, the side rails forni a tube .containing ail the other parts ot' the bed. The ends of the side rails we inclose with metal or other material.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. ln a folding cotbed, the side rails, each open on one side, adapted to receive and inclose the web or cloth, and legs and braces con- 85 stituting the other parts of the cot-bed, substantially as described.
2. In a folding cot-bed, the combination of the side rails, open on one side, with the cloth or web adapted to fold within the hollow formed by placing the two side rails together, substantiallyV as described.
3. In a folding cotbed, the combination of the side rails, open on one side, aweb or cloth, and hinged legs adapted to fold'with said web 95 within the open sides of the side rails, substantially as described.
EDVARD E. HERRINTON. HENRY O. RUSSELL.
