P. 0'. HOAGLAND.
FOLDING CRIB.
No. 538,462 Patented Feb. 5, 1895.
T/Vjz'nasses- UNITED STATES PATENT @rrrcn.
FRED C. I-IOAGLAND, OF ALBANY, NEWV YORK.
FOLDING CRlB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,462, dated February 5, 189 5 Application filed October 16 l 894.
To all wit-0112 it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED O. HOAGLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Albany, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Folding Crib, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to childrens cribs; and the object of my invention is to provide an adjustable folding crib adapted to be attached to the side piece of a bed. I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my crib attached to the side of a bed showing parts of the canvas broken away for the purpose of disclosing the bars and rods upon which the canvas is secured. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the crib folded. Fig. 8 is a cross section perspective of the canvas. Fig. 4. is a section along the line 1-1 on Fig. I. Fig. 5 is a section along the line 2-2 on Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the rod R showing the manner of connecting the sections of the rod, and Fig. 7 shows a modified form of the clip 0.
Similarletters refer to similar parts th roughout the several views. 7
To the side piece A of a bed, I arrange by means of the clip 6 attached to the side of one end of the bars F, the crib D. For the purpose of retaining the crib D securely in position, I arrange the supports E E to the under side of each end of the bar F, preferably attached thereto by hinges G G, adapted to press against the side piece A of the bed near the lower edge thereof, but capable of adjustment by means of links H attached to the bar F and registering in the grooves I, as shown in Fig. 1.
The bars F at the end of the crib are usually small squared strips of wood, the ends of which are fastened to the posts B B. Near the top of the posts along the ends parallel to the bars F, I arrange the rods J; each end of the rod being secured to the posts respectively.
I place a piece of canvas V, or other suitable material, about the bar F and extending across the end of the crib secured to the rod J, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, or in any suit- Serial No. 526,064;- (No model.)
able manner. The side rods R R are composed of two sections, shown in Fig. (5, joined together at or near their centers by a ferrule similar to the manner of joining a fishing rod, or in any suitable way; the ends of the rods R B being secured to the bars F F by means of thumb screws 6 S, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, or in any manner, by means of which the rods may be easily removed from connection with said bars.
I extend a strip of canvas V or other suitable fabric across the crib from side to side and from end to end by forming sleeves T T in the canvas or other fabric along each edge, through which the rods R R are inserted. Said sleeves may extend the whole length of the crib, or only a portion of said length; or they may be made in the form of sleeved straps, said strip of canvas or other fabric extending upward on one side, as shown in Fig. 3, provided with a sleeve T at its upper edge through which a smaller rod J similar in construction to the rods R R passes, and held in position in the posts 13 B at each end by fitting into openings made therefor. The ends of the canvas are secured to the bars F F and cross rods J J in the manner already described.
The clip 0 is constructed as shown in Fig. 1 of a T-shaped piece of metal secured to the end of the bar F and provided on its surface which comes into contact with the side piece A of the bed with the bars U U, which serve to hold it firmly in position and extending over the top of the side piece A; or it may be constructed as shown in Fig. 7 of a piece of metal secured to the side of the post B by means of a screw 0, extending downward a short distance and returning on itself in contact with the side of the bed A returning up to the under surface of the bar F, where it is secured by the screw 19, having on its surface next to the side piece A, the bars a. The end of the support E is provided with a piece of feltz' to prevent mar-ring the side of the bed A.
By means of the links H adjusted in the grooves I, the support E may be raised or lowered and held in the position desired, and when properly adjusted, the crib is perfectly secure and cannot be removed from the bed without first loosening the support E.
For the purpose of transporting the crib,
it is taken from the bed piece A, the thumb screws S are removed, and the rodsRR withdrawn from the canvas V, the rem oval of which will liberate the small rod J, which is also taken from the canvas V. The joints are broken and the posts B B'and canvas attached to the bar F and rod J is laid down on a line parallel with the bed portion of the crib. The supports E E are drawn upward fitting in contact with the clip 0, thelink H being placed toward the end of the support E, as shown in Fig. 2. The other posts B B and the rod J with the canvas attached to them are folded over in the canvas of the bed portion of the crib until it reaches the bar F at the opposite end, when the rod J and posts B B are laid over the folded portion and the rods R R and J together with the screws S S are placed between the bar F and rod J between the posts B and B, all making one compact parcel, which may be placed Within a traveling bag.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a folding crib, the combination of a frame provided with sides capable of being removed from the frame and disjointed, with a fabric provided with sleeves adapted to re ceive the side pieces of said frame, said fabric secured to the end thereof and when in position forming the bottom and ends of said crib, a means for attaching said frame to the side of a bed, with a support hinged to the bottom of the frame adapted to rest against the side piece ofabedadjusted by means of alink secured to the frame, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a folding crib, the combination of a frame having its lower side rails jointed and secured in the ends by 'means of thumb screws, its upper side railjointed and having its ends resting in sockets in the end posts, with a suitable fabric attached to the ends of the frame to both top and bottom rail and provided with sleeves through which the bottom and top rails of the side pieces maybe inserted, with clips secured to one side of the frame adapted to attach the crib to the side piece of a bed, with supports secured to the frame near the rail farthest from the bed, its opposite end resting against the side piece of the bed, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a folding crib, the combination of a frame having its side pieces removable and adapted to be disjointed, with the bottom and sides of the crib formed of a fabric provided with sleeves or straps through which the side rails pass and which is secured to the ends of the crib, with clips adapted to attach the crib to the side piece of a bed with supports secured to the frame of the crib and resting against the side piece of the bed, all so arranged that when detached from the bed, the side pieces may be removed, disjointed, and the crib may be folded from one end to the other and the side rails placed within the end rails and between the posts, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
