KOKOMO, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-CLIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,949, dated March 16, 1875; application filed March 6, 1875.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM VooRHEEs PERRY, of Beaver Dam, in the county of Dodge and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Clips; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the sccompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the use of a paper-file holder with a sharp or cutting edge, a lever for raising and lowering it,
and a baseplate, together with certain partsaccompanying them, as will be hereinafter described.
In the annexed drawing, which is a perspective of my devices, A represents a flat thin board of suitable size. B represents a metallic base-plate, which is secured upon the board A, and which is provided with the slots a a, into which the head of a paper-fastener will slide, to retain the lower portion of the file of papers. D D represent the ears of two metaltic plates, said plates being bent at right angles, and one portion of them confined or se-' springs, one end of each being secured in the board A, and the other end resting upon the clamp C. These springs hold the clamp down tightly upon the file of papers. E is a pin, which runs through the coils of the springs and is held there. This pin acts as a handle, with which to suspend the holder when necessary. H represents a lever, which is pivoted to the clamp O, which serves to lift and lower it, one end of said lever resting against the board A, and having upon it at one point a square edge, so that it will remain in position when it has once raised the clamp; otherwise this end of the lever is curved or cam-shaped. It will readily be seen that, when a file of papers are clamped by this holder, one or more of the papers may be cut off, or the whole may be released with ease, by the use of the lever H.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the board A, slotted base-plate B, metallic plates D D, the angular knife-edged clamp O pivoted thereto, shaft E, springs F F, and the J-shaped lever H, pivoted to the clamp 0, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of April, 1874.
WM. VOORHEES PERRY.
