Application filed IiEiebruary My invention has for its objectgmeans for marcelling or curling hair and belongs to that class oi devices whereinportionsJot hair are curled about a plurality oi tubular members each o't which is provided with a part or parts which grip and hold in place a portion or" hair, and thereafter a heated rod is inserted in the tube which thereupon becomes hot, and by conduction subjects the hair coiled thereon to the necessary degree of heat to establish a lasting curl when the device is removed.
Another object isa device 01" the Character described wherein a funnel shaped inlet is clipped over the tubularmember to facilitate the insertion of the heated rod, without coming in contact with the hair or scalp of the insertion of the rod shown dotted in position of use. Fig. t is a detail of the funnel member. Fig. 5'is a detail of the heating rod. lily invention is particularly directed to the tunnel member one form of which is illustrated in Fig. l and'which is shown by dotted lines in position on the curling device in Fig. 3 in combination with the other conventional parts.
The numeral 1 indicates a tubular memher through which pivots a loop of spring wire consisting of the legs 2,3. A keeper 4- is provided which is'slidable on said legs and engages over the tubular member as shown in Figs 2 and 3 when the loop is clamped about the hair.
At 5 is a short projecting end of spring wire adapted to engage the shorter hairs, as well known.
6 indicates a metallic rod adapted to be. heated and inserted into the tubular memher 1, and this rod is preferably provided with a heat insulatedend'l'.
My tunnel member comprises a pair of bent side plates 8, 9, pivoted together at 10,
10, 1925. Serial No. 8,157.-
in the Figure by the coil spring 12. L The projecting ends of these plates are adapted to'be gripped with the fingers and when compressed pivot about 10 and 11 overcoming the spring resistance and opening the lower, or end portions 13,-14: to
admit of being clamped over the end of the v curling device as shown in Fig.3. .When
the fingers are released the springgrips the sides 18, la about the end of the tubular or curling member and the flaring ends 8, 9
provide a funnel entrance for the rod 6.
The device is nsedas follows: The curling membercis first outfolded as shown in Fig; '1 and the hair'wrapped about the tubular member 1, with the shorter hairs.
rig-aged under the wire-5. The loop 2, 3 is hinged over the wrapped hair and the he parts will then present the full line appearance of Fig. 3.
A plurality ot these curling devices are distributed over the head, curling such portions of the hair as desired and the operator then grips the end plates 8, 9 of my funnel curling members in place and as shown by the dotted line in F igurej3. .The rod 6 is then heated and inserted into the tubular member 1, my funnel member aiding in locating the tube entrance and providing a tuilicient clearance space for the passage of tle rod 6 and the head 7, and enablingthe operator to avoid burning the hair or scalp.
The tunnel member is then removed by in gripping the sideplates 8, 9 as before,
leaving the heated rod in the tube and the funnel member is then applied to a second curling device and the above described pro-' ceuure is-repeated for each of thecurling devices employed. I V
Particular attention is directed to the spring wire member 5 which is wrapped about the tube 1, one end engaging over the end oi "the tube and the other end 15 lying against the tube and forming a spring member under which the shorter hairs are held during operation. i
I claim v 1. A device for curlinglhair, comprising a tubular member and means for gripping hair curled about said .member, a funnel shaped deviceadapted to clamp on'the end of said tubular member and to direct anim plement into said tube comprising a pair and normally held in the position shown is i i r a slid down over the end of the tube finember and engages this over one of the I of covered sides pivoted together and spring means therebetween adapted to force the small end of said sides together and to force the larger ends of said sides apart.
2. A device for curling hair consisting of a funnel shaped member and gripping means associated therewith adaptedto grip about the end of a tubular element ancl comprising a pair of curved sides pivoted together and spring means therebetween adapted to force the small ends of said sides together and to force the larger ends of said sides apart.
