Patented May 16, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAIR WAVING DEVICE Laura 'M. Chandonnet, Haverhill, Mass. Application August 6, 1938, 'Serial'No. 223,417
This invention or curls in hair.
Y 15 Claims.
relates to a device to form waves One object of my invention is to provide adevice that will form-wavesof the so-called permanent type in the hair of a person, whether it is and economical,
and quicker in operation than devices now used, and composed of parts or sections'that can readily be assembled and disassembled,'and are adaptable for use one or more sections at a time.
This latter featureis particularly desirable where the hair is short, or a wave is desired in new hair close to the scalp only which has grown since a wave was previously made in the hair, for one section only will best do this.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature ofthe invention is better understoo'cl, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawings and specifications.
The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and, therefore, I am not to be limited to said disclosures;
but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claims.
member for said Figure 4 is a member for said sections.
tive view of my plate.
perspective view of a retainer Figure 5 is a perspecdevice in use, showing one retainer member only partly broken away.
Figure 6 is 6-6 of Figure 5, retainer member a sectional view taken on the line and showing my device with the for the intermediate section and the clamping member for the rear section in position for use.
Figure '7 is a perspective view of a modified form of retainer member equipped with electrical heating units.
As illustrated,
there is a hair waving plate P consisting of one or more sections depending upon the length of the hair to be waved. The foremost 'hair curling section l2 consists of a bottom l4 and two upstanding sides l5 extending therefrom and spaced apart. Teeth or pin members l5 extend upwardly from said sides a short distance 'such as T g", there being a plurality of said teeth I6 in each side l5, spaced apart and preferably extending the full length of said sides. At the two ends of said waving plate P slots or slideways I! are formed by bending over a portion of the material forming the bottom 14 of said plate B so 'that'it extends below said bottom and is spaced therefrom. Ears l8 extend outwardly at both ends to make connection with a protector'member commonly used in waving hair.
The next or intermediate hair curling section Zll'has a bottom 2|, one upstanding side'ZZ having teeth 23 similar to'and corresponding with teeth l6. 'At the front part of said-section 26 a slide or connecting tonguellextendsoutwardly and is adapted to enter said slideways I! in the foremost section whereby said two sections l2 and 20 are joined together. This intermediate section 20 likewise has slideways 25 similar to the said slideways l'l which also serve as stops when they abut slideways ll at the point where saidsli'de member 24 has fully enteredsaid slideway 11. As many of these intermediate sections 20 may-be used as are necessary to wave the hair I-I, depending largely .on the length of the hair.
When the hair is short, said'foremost section l2 alone is used and constitutes the hair waving plate P. Likewise when a customer has had a permanent wave and later on desires only the newly grown hair to-be waved said section I2 is the only section the operator needs 'to use.
A rear member 30 is provided-whichhas a bottom 3| and a slide or connecting member 32 similar to member 24 which is adapted to .enter said slideways'25 to thereby connect with said intermediate section 20, thereby completing said hair waving plate P. At the two ends of said end member 30 are upstanding bracket members 33 in which slots 34 are formed, which are adapted to receive and support an :end curler rodor-clip 31 commonly used in hair waving at the ends of the "hair. In said rear member 30 recessed members 38 may be formed to receive a removable holder '39 used for convenience in handling my device and for placing it on the head of the customer.
For each :said section l2 and 20 there is a companion hair retaining presser or holder :member P having a clamp to hold it in position which iii consists of two jaws i! that are controlled by handles 42, which have overlapping ears 43 at each end through which a rod 45 passes around which is a coiled spring 46, held under such tension with relation to said jaws 41 that they are normally held closed. Extending from one said jaw 41 is a. retainer plate 41 which is adapted to fit over the bottom of said sections between said upstanding sides to thereby keep the hair H in place. Said plates 17 preferably have spring fasteners 49 at each end fastened as at 50 there.- to which hold said retainer plates 4! in close companionship with said waving plate sections, although separate clamps could be used. Between said retainer plates 41 and the bottoms of said waving plate sections the usual exothermic or chemical heat generating pads may, of course, be used, and the retainer member P may be equipped with electrical resistance units 69 as shown in Figure '7 of the drawings. To permit the escape of steam, perforations 53 are formed in the jaws M of said clamp P. There is a clamp ing member C for said rear members 30 having two jaws 4!, two handles 42, ears 43, rod 45 and spring 46 similar to those for said presser P. EX-
tending from one said jaw 4! of clamp C is a crescent-shaped hood 5 which receives and fits over said end curler rod 3?.
The parts for my device may be made of any suitable material, preferably of some light, pliable metal such as aluminum.
What I claim is:
