Description

March 1, 1932. AA F. GODEFROY HAIR CURLING APPARATUS Filed JanA 13, 1951 Patented Mar. 1, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT "o1-F1 ALEXANDRE F. GODEFROY, or LosvANGE'LEs, cALTFoRNIA HAIR CURLING APPARATUS Application led January 13, 1931. Serial No.`508,4177..
means whereby hair may be more quickly and satisfactorily curled or formed into permanent waves than has heretofore been possible.
Another object of the invention is to provide, as a new article of manufacture, an attachment for curling irons now in use which may be employed in conjunction with such curling irons to expedite the work of a hair dresser or operator of the beauty parlor in forming curls or permanent waves in the hair.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the heat for curling the hair may be applied thereto in a more effective manner so that the work will be more eiiiciently and satisfactorily done.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which illustrate what is at present deemed to be a preferred embodiment of the invention Fig. 1 of the drawings is a side elevation, slightly in perspective of a pair of curling irons having the attachment mounted there- Fig. 2 is an end View of Fig. 1, the curling iron beingin the closed condition.
Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 2 the curling irons having been withdrawn but the attachment having been slipped therefrom and being shown embedded in a. whirl of the hair.
Fig. 4 is a partial side View of the head of the subject showing the curling attachment in place within the hair during the curling operation, the electric circuit being partially in diagram.
Referring in detail to the drawings, Fig. 1r
shows a pair of curling irons provided with the usual concave-convex jaws 7 and 8 which are pivotally secured together at 9 and which lare operated by the usual handle members 10.
The attachment for said jaws which is provided by this invention, consists of the elo-ngated concavo-convex plates 11 and 12, said of the jaws 7 and 8 as shown in the drawings.V
no part of the present invention.
Each of these plates' is provided with a'pair of front clips 15 anda pair of rear clips16, these clips being adapted to engage the inner edged portions of the j awsof the curling irons as shown. By means .of saidV clips each of the elongated plates 11 is'slidably attached to the curling irons.) Y 1" if Each of the concavo-convex plates 11`is con-v structed as electrically heated members of the resistance type, on the same general principle as electrically heated implements, the `cle-- tail construction of the electric heating fea- 'i tures not being shown i1idrawings, for the reason that, .separately considered, they form The inner end of each of the he lting vplates f: is shown provided with aconducting wire`20 and the outer end with a conducting wire 21.'A The said wires being respectively detachably connected to thel plate in f any well known manner as by the terminal devices'22 and 23. In Fig. 2 the appearance of the curling irons with the curling plates'monted upon them 'A is shown as these parts appear after; the tool has been inserted'into the hair ofthe subject and then rotated several times-tlius'forming` a curl 30 of hairv around themas indicated in dotted lines in this view. VIn Fig. 3 are shown only the curling plates 11 'and 12, the curling iron having been` withdrawn from said" plates leaving said plates embedded in a curl g ofhairSO. .Y 1- i In Fig. 4 are shown a number yof curl. clumps of hair 30, the curling plates being embedded within the lcurls of hair shown, and by means of the wires 35 and 36 being-connected with a Vsource ofelectric supply ,for the purpose of supplying additional heat to the curled hair to add lto thepermanencyofthe curlingY operation. 1 f y i Y In-the operation of the apparatus the curling plates 11 and 12 are' detachably mounted upon the jaws of the curlingiron as shown in Fig. 1. The wires 20 and 21 are connected electrically with each of said plates. After this hasbeen done electric current issupplled from any suitablesource (not shown)V until said platesl becomesuicientlyheated to per-v formproprly vthe curling operation. The Y wires 20 and 21 are then detached from each of the concave-convex plates and the tool is then ready for use. Vhile the plates 11 and l2 are still hot the tool is thrust into the hair and rotated in the usual manner thus Winding 5 the hair upon the aws of the tool and upon the plates 1l and 12 mounted thereon.
If desired7 `several pairs oftcurling: tongs Y may simultaneously have the acurling plates mounted thereon and said curling plates then 10 electrically heated in the manner stated.
After each curlingironihasbeen `thrustintol the hair, together' with the heated lplates and rotated to curl the hair thereon, then` thecurling iron is Withdrawn fromthe concave-con- Vex curling plates, said plates being thus left embedded with ai `pair of: thet plates? within each curledfwportionof tlrewhair asshownin Fig.' 3f Finally,: afterfthefdesire'd number ofy th'eipaired curling plates'haveibeenembedded ini.- thefvhain.- as shown: in Fig.. 4,' .i the Wires 20V andf-21= may'gagainebe connected up'v with' thev plates and the plates againi-heated torender thefcurlingJ ofithetfhainmorepermanent;
