The hair is then wound spirallyabout the waving rod 28 as `shown in Fig. 1, following which a strip, known in the art asa striX', of flannel or other suitable material which has been Vdampened in a suitable steaming solution is tightly wound spirally about the hair. The heater '29 is now superimposed over the waving rod with the hair and llannel strip or striX wound thereabout, a suitable opening being provided in the top of the heater for the passing therethrough of the waving rod 28, the bottom of the heater being seated upon the top of the holder as shown in Fig. 2. The rod 28 is provided with a circumferential notch 30 within which a spring loch 31 engages to hold the heater firmly seated against the holder and provide a substantially airtight joint therewith. The heater is of a well known type and is provided with resistance coils which are heated by electric current supplied thereto by wires 32, 33 which are connected with a lighting circuit or other source of current.
Y rlhe shield 3 is preferably circular in form and is of a greater diameter than the holder whereby the metal parts of which the latter is comprised are effectually prevented from coming into contact with the hairand scalp and burning them, it being understood that when the heater is operating steam is generated from the striX and the metal parts of the holder become heated. By my improved holder, it will also be observed, escape through the holder to the scalp of the steam and the liquid resulting from condensation is prevented inasmuch as the opening extending from the `holder through the shield is scaled by the clamping member in its pinching contact with the hair, as above described. It will now be seen that the waving rod, holder and shield may be assembled intoa Vunit before applying' to the headv of the patron and the hair of a block may then be readily pulled through `openings provided therefor in the shield,rcork layer and holder and the clamping member moved into pinching relation with the hair; the waving rod, partly threaded upon the screw 2 5, is
then secured against the top plate of the holder, thereby drawing-the shield, cork'layer' and the holder partstogether 'and firmly securing the hair in the holder as desired; the hair is then wound about' the waving rod, the strix applied thereto and the heater positioned. 1 Y y In practice, the necessary number of wavunits are applied to the hair at the sam-e time and they are operated simultaneously.
Owing to the protection afforded by my invention against scalp Land hair burns', the employment of an attendant for .each patron to operate an air cooler is made unnecessary.
Furthermore, a single operator is capable of attending to four or more patrons at the same time while hitherto an ope-ratorhas been required for each patron. The labor cost has accordingly been greatly reduced and with entire safety and less discomfort to the patron.
While l have herein described with parstruction and arrangement of parts as the same may be modified and varied in minor particulars from those shown in the drawings and herein described without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States:
1. In a device of the class described, a hairholder comprising a top plate, a` bottom plate, a slideway within said bottom plate, a clamping member within said slideway and slidable therein, said plates and clamping member being provided with openings through Which the hair passes, said clamping member being adapted to be moved to intersect the passage formed by said openings in said plates Whereby the hair is compressed and securely held.
2. In a device ofthe class described, a hairholder comprising a top plate, a bottom plate, a slideway within said bottom plate, a clamping member slidable within said slideway and means for locking said clamping member within said slideway.
3. In a device of the class described, the

4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a heat insulating member, a hair-holder secured thereto and comprising a top plate, a bottom plate and a clamping member for securing the hair against withdrawal from the holder, a screw passing through said plates and clamping member and projecting above the top plate and a waving rod adapted to be threaded onto said screw to draw said plates and clamping member firmly together and secure said clamp-y ing member against movement.
