This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for use in the art of permanent hair waving.

An object of improved permanent embodying novel means for maintalnmg a heating element in operating position ad acent the hair to be treated.

Another object of my invention is to pro- 19 vide improved apparatus for use in hair waving having novel means embodied therein for protecting a persons head from heated water, moisture or steam resulting from a hair waving or treating operation.

A further object of my invention is to provide improved apparatus for use in permanent hair waving, embodying novel means for applying heat to strands of hair to be treated. A still further object of my inventiorrls to provide novel and improved apparatus tor use in permanent hair waving, embodying compact means for confining the Vapors resulting from a hair waving process to a definite area surrounding the hair being treated.

Other objects more or less apparent Wlll present themselves or will be specifically pointed out in the description to follow.

Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved permanent hair waving apparatus, showing the same in operative position with a strand of hair therein, a part of the apparatus being shown in perspective;

Referring to the drawings the numerals 1 and 2 represent clamping blocks suitably attached together as by a hinge, the said blocks each carrying a rubber pad 3 on its inner face between which a strand of hair may be firmly held. The persons hair to be treated for the purpose of producing permanent waves my invention is to provide an hair waving apparatus H therein, is' ordinarily clamped or otherwise suitably fastened to a. spool 4 and there after firmly wound into a roll thereon. After the strand of hair has been prop erly wound about the spool, a semicylindrical shaped shield 5, constructed from aluminum or other suitable material, is posi tioned beneath the roll of hair with a part thereof positioned directly OVGIItllB' opening between the two blocks2 and 3. The shield 5 is intended primarily to prevent moisture, steam or water resulting from the treatment of the hair, from passing between the blocks and injuring the persons scalp. The'water' ormois'ture which-forms while the hair is being heated drops onto the shield 5, rather than onto the blocks and is thereby prevented from dropping onto the "persons scalp.

In order. to prevent the vapors resulting from a permanent waving process from escaping, a covering 6 of flannel or other suit able material is placed around a part of the roll of hair and over a part of the'shield 5. Over the flannel covering 6 is: ordinarily placed in the order givenfa stripof paper 7 anda strip of metal gauze 8, the same being used to insure the confinement of the. vapors to the area within the roll of hair. Detachably mounted over the roll comprisingthe hair, shield, covering and strips, is a clamping member 9 formed withsemi=cylindrical sides which extend outwardly and inwardly at their top edges to form a semi-cylindrical shaped socket 10 within which an elongated heating element 11 is adapted to fit. The lower edges of the clamping member 9'extend inwardly toward each other and are adapted to press the covering 6 as well as the strips 7- and 8 against the roll of hair and the shield 5, thereby preventing the displacement of the various parts of the apparatus after they have once been placed in operating positions. The curved sides of the clamping member 9 do not meet at their top edges, thereby permitting the heating element 11 to contact wtih the strip 8 of metal gauze.

The heating element 11 is formed in the usual manner with a casing having a plurality of windings of fine wire therein, the said wires being suitably connected to the terminals of an electric light plug for insertion into a socket.

Quantities of heat from the heating element 11 being confined to the space located inside the clamping member 9, and itsv semi-cylindrical socket 10, pass around and through the stripsand covering, thereafter entering the roll of hair which is to be treated for producing permanent waves therein. 7

The shield 5 aswell as the clamping memher 9 may each be stamped from a single piece of material and thereafter formed particular shapes shown.

It is obvious to those skilled in the art that my improved permanent hair waving apparatus may be constructed in other forms equally as eflicient as the one shown and described so for this and other apparent reasons I desire my invention included broadly within the spirit of the appended claims.

Permanent hair waving apparatus comprising a pair of clamping blocks between which a strand of hair is held, a spool about which the strand of-hair is wound, a curved shield located above the blocks and beneath the spool, a clamping member having sides adapted to fit overthe hair rolled on the spool,

a hollow socket formed integrally with the clamping member, and a heating element detachably mounted in the socket.

2. In permanent hair waving apparatus, a pair of clamping blocks between which a strand of hair is held, a spool about which the hair is wound, a clamping member extending around the spool, a hollow socket formed on the clamping member, and a heating element detachably mounted in the socket.

3. In permanent hair waving apparatus, a semi-cylindrical shaped clamping member adapted to extend partly around a roll of hair, a semi-cylindrical shaped socket formed integrally with the clamping member, the said socket being closed at its top side and adapted to-contain a heating element.

4. In permanent hair waving apparatus, a plurality of hair clamping members, the inner faces of which are positioned adjacent each other when the members are in a clamped position, a spool located above the clamp ing members and a shield removably positioned over the top edges of the inner faces of the clamping members and between the spool and the clamping members.
