PERMANENT WAVE` CLIP Filed Oct. 25, 1957 ATT RNEY Patented Dec. 13, 1938 James Edward Dwyer, New YorkyN: Y..assignor to E. Frederics, Inc., New York, N. Y., accrpo.-v
ration of New York Application October 23, 1937; Serial No. 170,526
10 Claims.
The invention relates to clips for use in hair waving and particularly to the type of clip which is adapted for use in the production of permanent waves.
Among the coiffures which hairdressers are called upon to produce are a number of styles which require the production of a wave or curl at only the end of the hair, that is, what is commonly referred to as end curls. In creating this sort of wave by methods employing the type of curlers or protector clips and heaters used prior to my invention there frequently occurred scalp burns or neck burns by reason of the loose arrangement of these devices in the hair. The curlers or protector clips and heaters were secured to the hair three or. four inches away from the scalp and no positive means were provided for holding them away from the head and neck. It is an object of the present invention .to eliminate this hazard by providing a clip of such a construction as to prevent the heating element from coming in contact with the scalp.
A further and more specific object of the invention is to provide a permanent wave clip which has a supporting bracket adjustable to various positions in accordance with the length of the hair which is to be left uncurled and which makes it possible to secure a uniform curl around the head. Other objects and advantages will appear as the. description proceeds.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is an end elevational view of a preferred embodiment of my novel wave clip illustrating the manner of application thereof.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of this same clip and Fig. 3 an elevational view thereof as seen from the right side of Fig. 2.
Figs. 4 and 5 are a plan view and elevational view respectively oi another embodiment of the invention in which a dual supporting bracket is provided.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 3 there is shown a clip comprising a pair of separable arms I and 2 hinged together at one end as at 3 and provided at the other end with a locking device, indicated generally at 4, for holding the arms I and 2 tightly together after the hair has been drawn therebetween. The arms I and 2 are provided with suitable resilient coverings I', 2. At either end of the arms I and 2 there are provided supporting members 5 and 6 adapted to support a curling rod of any desired form. Supporting member G is provided with a rotatable locking clip 1 for securing the curling rod in place.
Secured to the arm I is an adjustable support- (chica-3a).
ing bracket comprising channel-shaped @ extensions 8 and 9 in`which are slidably arrangedthe legs I0 of a supporting bracket, the head bearingv portion II ofA which preferably'is provided with a pad I2 which may be of cork or other.` 5 resilient heat-insulating material which will provide a cool and comfortable rest againstthe head. The arms I0 are provided with longitudinal slots I3 and rivets I4 pass freely through theseslots and through apertures formed inv the 1o extensions 8 and 9 to secure'the legs IU ofthe` bearing member II to the extensions Band: 9.- The rivets I4' likewise extend through apertures in friction spring elements I5 which. are held under tensionby the rivets It against the legs 15 IB so that the bearing member II is held thereby in any desired adjustmentr with respect to the clip. In Figs. 2 andl 3 the bearing member II is shown in its fully extended position. The
extension 9 is attached to the arm I of the clip 204 by means of a laterally-extending flange I6A which is riveted to the arm I at I1; A similar securing flange IB'is provided on the other extension 8, which also may be riveted tothearm I although I prefer that it be left free to permit 25,
the extension 8 to be swung out of theway so as to permitfthe removal of the resilientcovering I' from the arm Ii in the event that its replacement is desired. Withfthis construction the iiange I8 is held in place by the arm I and its resilient 30 covering I'. At the ends of the bearing portion II of the supporting bracket there are provided extensions I9 which preferably are covered with a felted tape or other soft material.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 35 the clip member with its arms I and 2 and other related structure is the same as has been described with reference to Figs. 2 and 3 but in place of the single adjustable supporting bracket there is provided a double bracket consisting of lo two wire elements 20 having curved head bearing portions 2| and legs 22 the ends of which are bent over at 23 and pushed between the arms I and 2 and their respective resilient covering members i and 2. The legs 22 preferably are 45 bent in the manner indicated in Fig. 5 so that the bearing portions 2I are separated to provide a wider supporting base for the clip.
In the application of my improved clip to the curling of the ends of the hair, the arms I and 2 5o are separated and a lock of hair drawn over the lower arm I in such a position as to leave the desired length of straight hair, as at 24 in Fig. 1. The second arm 2 is then brought down against the arm I and the two locked together by means 55 of the securing latch 4. If the supporting bracket Il has not been adjusted previously to the correct position, it is now adjusted in such a Way as to provide a support against the scalp or neck. The ends of the hair which are to be curled are next Wrapped around the curling rod, which is rolled into position in the supporting members 5 and 6 and locked by means of the rotatable clip 1. Such a curling rod is shown in position in Fig. 1 at 25. If a ratchet type rod of the form known to workers in this art is employed, my adjustable supporting means may be used Without clamping arms, the hair being held by the rod and the length of uncurled hair being determined by the adjustment of the bracket.
It will be understood that various modications may be made in the embodiments which I have described Without departing from the claimed invention and I have no intention of excluding such modications or mechanical equivalents as may fall within the purview of the claims.
I claim:
1. A hair Wave clip, comprising means for supporting a curling rod, means associated with said supporting means for clamping the supporting means to the hair, said clamping means provided with a supporting bracket having a bearing portion for contact with the scalp, said bearing portion being arranged in spaced relationship to said clamping means for maintaining said clamping means away from the scalp.
