. CUR CLIP Filed Aug. 7, 1959 amt/WM Patented May 21, 1940 UNETEE STATES PATENT OFFICE CURL CLIP Pearl Eicher, near Application August 1'7,
9 Claims.
The invention relates to the general type of curl clips including opposed lever arms pivoted with respect toeach other and spring urged towards each other for gripping the moistened hair strands of a curl and holding the curl in position on the head until dry.
In usual curl clips of this general type the gripping arms extend substantially at right angles to the axis of the curl, which is usually a m ringlet, one of the gripping arms extending beneath the curl and resting upon the head, and the other gripping arm extending across the outside of the curl and covering a substantial portion of the same.
Such a usual curl clip does not hold the curl as securely as is desirable, does not make a curl as perfect as desirable, and delays the drying of the curl.
The objects of the present invention include the provision of an improved curl clip which is adapted to hold a curl securely in position on the head, which is adapted to make curls more perfect than is ordinarily attainable by the usual ordinary curl clips or hair pins, and which is adapted for permitting quicker drying of a curl than is attainable by the use of a usual curl clip having spring urged gripping arms pivoted with respect to each other, the gripping arms of which extend at substantially right angles to the plane of the curl and one of the gripping arms extending beneath the curl and lying against the head and the other gripping arm extending across and covering a substantial portion of the curl.
Further objects of the present invention include the provision of an improved curl clip which is adapted for rapid and easy application to the moistened hair strands of a curl.
Further objects of the present invention include the provision of an improved curl clip of simplified construction and which is adapted for easy and economical production.
The foregoing and other objects are attained by the curl clip, parts, combinations, and sub-combinations of the present invention, the nature of which is set forth in the following general statement, and by way of example preferred embodiments of which and their mode of operation are set forth in the following description, and which are particularly and distinctly pointed out and set forth in the appended claims forming part hereof.
The nature of the improved curl clip of the present invention may be stated in general terms as including levers pivoted with respect to each other and having opposed spring pressedgripplng North Canton, 0111c 1939, Serial No. 290,655
arms for gripping the hair strands at one side of a curl or ringlet and a hook foot extending from the outer end of one of the gripping arms, the hook foot being angled with respect to the gripping arm from which it extends and extending beyond the outer surface of one of the arms preferably across and beyond the outer end of the other arm and being adapted to hook under the curl and rest against the head and maintain the clip clear of the curl beyond the gripped hair strands.
By way of example, preferred embodiments of the improved curl clip and parts thereof, are illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is an enlarged side elevation of a preferred embodiment of the improved curl clip hereof;
Fig. 2, a top plan view thereof;
Fig. 3, an isometric view thereof; and
Fig. 4, an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the side of a womans head showing the improved curl clip gripping a hair curl or ringlet.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The illustrated preferred embodiment of the improved curl clip hereof is indicated generally by It! and includes opposed spring pressed pivoted levers indicated generally by II and 12, each preferably formed from sheet metal and pivoted with respect to each other as by means of tongues [3 extending from opposite sides and intermediate the ends of the lever I I, the tongues l3 overlapping tongues M extending from opposite sides and intermediate the ends of the lever l2.
The overlapping tongues I3 and I4 have registering apertures formed therein through which a pivot pin l5 extends and is secured, and the longitudinal axis it of the pivot pin I5 is the pivoting axis of the clip.
At one side of the pivoting axis l6 of the clip, the lever It includes a curl gripping arm 11, and at the same side of the pivoting axis It, the lever It includes a curl gripping arm It opposed to the curl gripping arm 11.
From the outer end of the curl gripping arm 11 a hook foot l5 extends at an angle to the arm l1 beyond the outer surface of one of the arms and preferably across and beyond the outer end of the curl gripping arm l8.
At the other side of the pivoting axis IS, the lever H includes a manipulating arm 20 angled with respect to the hair gripping arm l1, and at the same side of the pivoting axis Hi, the lever 12 includes a manipulating arm 2! angled with respect to the hair gripping arm l8 and opposite the manipulating arm 20 of the lever II.
The hair gripping arms or members l1 and I8 are spring urged towards each other as by a coil spring 22 wound about the pivot pin l and having its ends 23 and 24 respectively pressing against the opposed inner faces of the manipulating arms 20 and 2| respectively.
The hair gripping arms [1 and I8 are preferably slightly concave towards each other radially of the pivoting axis I 6, as best shown in Fig. 1, and the arms I! and II! also preferably have formed therein elongated central apertures 25 and 26 respectively.
The hair gripping arms I! and I8 are preferably laterally tapered with their widest portions adjacent the pivoting axis l6, and the hook foot I9 is likewise preferably similarly tapered to minimize the area of the hair gripping portions of the clip.
In using the improved curl clip I0, moistened strands of hair are formed into a curl or ringlet 2! as shown in Fig. 4, as by winding around the finger of the operator. The gripping arms I1 and I8 of the clip ID are then opened by pressing on the manipulating arms 20 and 2|, and the hair strands at one side of the curl 21 are engaged by the gripping arms I! and I8, with the angled hook foot I9 extending beneath the curl and laying against the head, and maintaining the gripping arms of the clip l0 clear of the curl beyond the gripped hair strands.
The curl 21 is thus quickly secured by the improved clip It], with only a small area of the curl obstructed by the clip, so that rapid drying and setting of the curl is effected.
The embodiments of the present improvements illustrated and described herein are by way of example, and the scope of the present invention is not limited to the same or to the particular details thereof, but is commensurate with any and all novel subject matter contained herein which at any time properly under the patent laws may be set forth in the claims hereof or originating herein, and the elements of any such claims are intended to include their functional or structural equivalents.
