UNITED STATES DAVID RE DAVID, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAIR-WAVING DEVICE.
Application filed February This invention relates to a hairwaving device and more particularly to a device for producing a finger wave.
One of the objects of the invent-ion is to provide a device which greatly facilitates the production of a so-called finger wave in ladies hair. Another object is to provide a device of the above nature which is simple to use. Another object is to provide a device of the above nature which is simple in construction and inexpensive to build. Other objects will be in part obvious or in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangements of parts as will be exemplified in the structure to be hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
1n the accompanying drawing in which is shown one of the various possible embodiments of this invention,
Figure 1 is a side view;
Figure 2 is a view at right angles to that shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 illustrates the device in use upon the hair, and
Figure 4 .is a transverse section taken as indicated by the line 4-4 in Figure 3.
Similar' reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, there is shown a device consisting of a pair of elongated members which cross adjacent the middle in the manner of a pair of shears and are pivoted together by a suitable pin 10. These two members have on one side of the pivot 10 opposed arms or jaws 11 and 12 which operate upon or engage the hair and, on the other side of the pivot 10, handle portions 13 and 14. The parts 11 and 13 preferably constitute one integral member or arm and the parts 12 and 14 preferably constitute one integral member or arm, the arms being preferably made of metal although other materials may be employed.
A spring is provided which acts upon the two arms tending to hold the parts 11 and 12 separated, substantially as shown in Figure 1. Preferably this spring takes the form of a leaf spring member 15 positioned between the handle portions 13 and 14 ad- 4, 192s. sei-iail No. 251,950.
jacent to the pivot 10. The spring member 15 is shown of substantially S-shape, fastened at one end by a rivet 1C, to the inner side of the handle member 14 and having at its other end a projecting lug` 17 which rides in a slot 18 formed on the inner side of the handle member 13. The two arms are preferably provided with bends, as shown at 19 and 20, so that, when the jaws 11 and 12 are brought together, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, the handle members 13 and 14 are still spaced apart.
As shown in Figure 2, the arms or jaws 11 and 12 are preferably substantially fiat and thin and of substantial width, having opposing flat surfaces 11a and 12LL which come together when the handle members 18 and 14 are drawn together against the action of the spring 15. Also, the ends of the arms 11 and 12 are preferably rounded as shown. Along the corresponding edges of the arms 11 and 12 are projecting teeth 21 and 22 similar to the teeth of a comb except that they are short, being preferably on the order of one-eighth inch or one-quarter inch in length.
In producing a finger wave in hair, the hair is ordinarily dampened. In the use of this device, a lock of the dampened hair, as shown at 23 in Figures 3 and 4, is shaped into a loop or fold 24 and this loop or fold is gripped and pressed, as shown in Figure 4, by the arms 11 and 12, the device being gripped by the handles 13 and 14 and the arms being brought together by pressing the handles together. The teeth 11a and 12l face toward the scalp or the head and comb the lock of haid as the jaws are brought together, insuring even distribution of the hair and the production of a regular and uniform wave. rlhe loop of hair may then be pinned along the top about the jaws 11 and 12 and the device is then removed; the waves are held in place while the hair is dried. i
It will be seen that the device provided herein greatly facilitates the production of a so-called linger wave and makes it possible to form a better wave and to accomplish the desired result more quickly than heretofore.
As many possible embodiments may be made of the above invention and as many changes might be made in the embodiment .above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter hereinbefore set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim: e
l. A device for use in producing a finger wave in hair comprising a pair of arms pivoted together` to swing toward 'and away from each other having substantially flat surfaces between which a 1loop of the hair is gripped when the arms are swung together and having teeth along the edges thereof facing toward the scalp when the device is in use.
k2. A device for use in producing a finger Vwavein hair comprising a pair of arms pivoted together, said arms having on one side of said pivot parts having substantially fiat surfaces between which a loop of the hair is gripped and on the other kside ofthe pivot a'pai'r of handle parts to be operated for swinging said arms to engage and disengage the hair, said hair-engaging arins'having projecting teeth along the edges thereof.
3. A device for use in producing a finger Wave in hair comprising a pair of arms pivoted together, said arms having on one side of said pivot parts having substantially flat surfaces between which a loop of the hair is gripped and on the other side of the pivot a pair, of handle partsrto be operated for swinging said arms Vto engage and disengage the hair, said hair-engaging arms having projecting teeth along i the edges thereof facing toward the scalp when the device is in use, and a springl normally holding said arms apart.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification this 30th day of January, 1928.
