To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, HENRY S. BREWING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair Curlers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices for crimping or curling the hair, and its object is to provide a device of this kind which will not break or otherwise damage the hair, and which is simple in construction so that it can be easily and cheaply produced.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the kind stated which will effectually serve the purpose for which it is designed, and which is light in weight and simple in operation.

With the objects stated in view, the in vention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter de scribed and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is an elevation of the-device; Fig. 2 is an end view thereof; Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the manner in which the device is used; Fig. 4 is an elevation showing a slightly modified form of the device, and Figs. 5 and 6 are end views thereof.

Referring specifically to the drawing, and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 3, the device here shown consists of a pair of elongated jaws on one of which the whisp of hair is wound as shown in Fig. 3, and so held by the other jaw. The first-mentioned.

jaw member is denoted by the reference numeral 8, and the other jaw member by the reference numeral 9. The two jaw members are constructed of a single piece of wire which is bent upon itself intermediate its ends, as shown at 10, in the form of a loop, said loop being resilient so that the jaw member 8 has an inherent tendency to spring away from the jaw member 9. It will be noted that the jaw member 9 has a wavy or sinuous form, whereas the jaw member 8 is straight. The free end of the jaw member 9 is bent to form a transverse hook 11 adapted to receive the free end of the jaw mem her 8 when the latter is closed, and thus serve to hold the same in this position.

In use, the whisp of hair is wound around aw member 8 into the hook 11. With the parts in this position, the jaw member 9 is firmly pressing against the whisp of hair wound on the jaw member 8, and the device is left in place for the desired length to efiect the curling or crimping of the hair, this action being expedited and made more effective by the pressure of the sinuous mem- 9 against the whisp of hair. It will be seen by reference to Fig. 3 that the jaw member 9 is sinuous in a direction transverse of the jaw member 8, and that when the device is closed and in holding position, the aw member Slies in a plane located midway between the convolutions.

The device is very efiicient, and in view of the simplicity of its structure, it can be easily and cheaply manufactured.

The modified form of the device does not diifer materally from the one just described, except that the jaw member 8 corresponding to the jaw member 8 in the first described structure is doubled, the two strands of wire at the free end being joined by a bend 8 which is engageable with the hook 11 at the free end of the member 9. The device is also constructed of a single piece of wire, one end of which is the hook 11. At the inner end of the length of wire forming the jaw member 9 a return bend 9 is made and the wire is then continued forwardly and back to form the two members constituting the jaw S, the end of the wire being socured by being twisted around the bend 9*,

as shown at 9 in Fig. 5. This method enables the device to be easily and cheaply manufactured.

I claim:

1. A hair curler or crimper comprising a pair of resiliently connected elongated jaw members, one of said members having a sinuous form and the other jaw member being straight, and means for locking said members in closed position.
