Te @ZZ (t0/wm z' may concern.; l n
kBe it known that I, HARRiET L. BBAii/N, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at'Des Moines, in the county of Polk andState of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in IIair Curlers, of which the following isa spec'ilication.
This invention relates to a device for curling hair, .the general object "of the inven tion being toprovide means for clamping a lock of hair so that Vthe lock can be wrapped around the device andmeans for holding the device in place withi'the lock wrapped around the same. i i
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying 'drawings and speciiically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figures 1 and 2 are views showing how the device is used.A
Figure 3 is a view of one form of the invention with the parts in partly open position.
Figure 4 is a view of another form of the invention with the parts in closed position,
Figurev 5 is a view of another form of the invention. f
Figure 6 is a view of a further form.
Figure 7 is a view of another form.
Figures 8 and 9 are views of a further form. Y
Figures 10, 11 and 12 are views of 'a form of the invention made of wire.
As shown in these views the device con sists of a pair of jaw members 1 and 2 which are arranged to clamp a lock of hair between them so that the lock can be wrapped around the device and a hinged member 3 which is arranged to be held to one of the aw mem` bers by a hook 4: so that the device can be held with the lock of hair wrapped around the same. Figures 1 and 2 show how the device is used and the hair can be rolled upon the device in either direction according to the desiredposition of the curl. In the forniA shown in Figure the jaws 1 and 2 are formed from a flat piece of metal von the jawland is'adaptedi'to. e
doubled A upon itselfI withv thehook 4: formed upon the eX'ten'ded'V endiofithe The jaws.Y are adapted telicl in` g('Jlesedjlfposition by a clip 5 which slidablynionlited u gambe reducedjend of the, j aw 2. The finembeij'" 3-` is formed of a roundbar which has'ionie'e'nd passing through a hole in the looped end of the StripfOrmingftlie' 1 and'2 and bent over to form afhin/ge.v Theother end ofthismeliber engage the hook i The device shown inFigurefL is somewhat similar to thatl shownin Figure feirceiptiiig the hook 4 is located at one side of the jaw 1 instead of the center of the end thereof.
The device shown in Figure 5 is similar to that shown in Figure i with the eXception that the looped end 6 of the member 3 is passed through the eye formed by the looped end of the strip forming the jaws 1 and 2 instead of passing this part through a hole in the strip. Y In this form of the invention the member 3 is of waved construction as shown at 6.
In the form shown in Figure 7 the hook t isformed on the clip 5. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to those before described.
In the modification shown in Figure 6 an S-shaped hook 5 is formed on the 'end` of the lower aw so that the third member can be held in engagement with either the jaw 1 or the jaw 2, this member being so connected thatit can be swung entirely'around on its hinge.
In the forni of the invention shown in Figures 8 and 9 the jaws 1 and 2V are of channel shape in cross section so that the curl will be given a waved effect. Y In this form also the two jawsare movably held together by the looped end ofthe member 3 which members.
In the modification shown in Figures 10, 11 and 12 the device is formed of wire, as shown at 7 the two jaw members being held together by a clip 8 which is slidably mounted on the lower jaw and the third member being formed with a single strand of wire which is hingedly connected with the jaw members by having its looped ends threaded through coils formed in said members.` It engages a hook 9 formed at the front end of the main aw member. In most of the forms the two jaw members are so connected toso i' passesthrough holes in said jaw gether that they will spring open as soon as the upper jaw-is released from the clip.
This device Will act yto curlv and Wave bobbed hair as Well as long hair andfit isM especially useful on short strands of hair. The third member acts to hold the device in place With the hair Wrapped Jaround it so that there is no danger of the device being released from the hair,
in I
lpartskprovided that such changes fall Withvinthe scope of the appended claims.
. What I claim is i l. A device of the class described comprising a pair of jaw members, aclip for holding thejavv members together, a hook on one ofthe jaw members,^a member hingedly connectedl with the jaw members and adapted to have its freeend placed under the hook.
2. A device of the class described comprising 'a' pair of jaw members, a clip slidably mounted on' one jaW member and adapted to engage the end of the other member for holding the jaw members together, a hook carried by the lower member at its outer end, a bar hingedly connected With the jaw members at their connected ends and having its free end adapted to be placed under the hook.
3. i-ildeviceor1 the class described comprising a pair of javv members for clamping a locker' hair between them, a third member hingedly7 connected With the jaw members so that it can be swung against the outer face of either member and a double hook on the outer end of one jaw member for receiving the outer end of the third member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
, HARRIET L` BRANN.
