HAIRPIN BARRETTE.

This invention relates to the class of toilet articles and pertains"particularly to a bar retto.

The primary object ot this invention is to provide a barrette having theappearance oi a hair pin and 'toi-med to so 'fold and clasp the hair that it cannot easily become loosened and lost and when in use. it will have the ap pearance of a hair pin in the hair.'

A llhe present invention is so designed that the usual metal hair pins or metal hair pin wire may be employed for making the saine, the ends of the pins being secured together to torni the same in the shape ot elongated loops, one end ot one loop being rolled over one end ot an adjacent loop to hngedly connect the two together. One ot the loop-s at other ond is turned upwardly and the adjacent end ot the other loop is designed to snap therebeneath to rictionally hold the loops together.

A particular feature oi' the barrette embodying the present invention is the clasp means employed i'or maintaining the two sections ot the barrette together, this clasp being such that the sections are securely connected when in use and at the same time a disconnection may be made quickly and easily.

The invention will be best understood from a consideration ot the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanyin g drawings forming part ot this specification.. with the understandin gy however, that the invention is not coniined to any strict conformity with the showing oit the drawings but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no nia-- terial departure from the salient features ot the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing inA detail it will be seen that the present device comprises two members indicated by the numerals 1 and 2, each of these members being in the term ot an elongated loop. As will be readily seen, the sido members or legs ot the loop l converge from the ends ol' the cross bar 3 to the point where they turn outwardly to connect to the cross or latch bar l.

The member 2, lilre the member l, also has the legs 6 thereof connected at one end by the cross bar 7, the legs G extending therefrom in convergent relation to the yoke or rounded tip 8 at the opposite end.

The members l and 2 are coupled together by arranging the bar 7 of the member 2 over the legs 5 of the member l adjacent the bar 3 thereof` and then rolling or looping the ends of the legs 5 adjacent the bar 3 to form the hinge eyes 9 through which the bar-7 loosely extends. These hinge eyes are each Vset in a plane lying at an acute angle with respect to the longitudinal center of the mem ber l and diverging in the direction of the remote end thereof. It will thus be seen that part oit each eye lies in the path of movement of one side of the member 2 so that when the members are brought together the sides or legs of the member 2 will be sprung out by and will engage under the eyes and be held thereby.

The relative lengths of the members l and 2 are such that when the same are connected together in the manner described and one of the members brought in superposed relation to the other the rounded end 8 of the member 2 will snap under the latch bar l at the outer end of the member l and thus hold the two loops securely in juxtaposition.

In order to increase the gripping action of the loop legs 5 and 6, pins having corrugated legs may be employed or, of course, if the loops are made of ordinary wire and bent to the toi-m ot the hair pin, the same may be corrugated in the manner shown.

From the foregoing description, it will be readily seen that a barrette oi the t-ype described will haven relatively wide hair engaging area and will be easy to apply and remove from position.

Having described my invention what I claim is l. A barrette ot the character described, comprising a pair oit elongated loop members lll() each being of greater Width at one end than at the other and each having a bar member formed across its Wide end, hinge eyes formed of the side bars of one loop adjacent the Wide end of the same and having the cross bar of the other loop extending therethrough, means whereby the free end or one of the loops may be sprung beneath the free end of the other loop When the loops are brought int-o operative position, to maintain the same in sueh position, and means whereby said eyes Will be caused to frietionally engage the side members of the other loop when the loops are in operative position. n

2. A barrette of the character described, comprising a pair of elongated loop members each being of greater Width at one end than at the other, one of said members having a bar formed across its wide end, a pair of hinge eyes formed at the wide end of the other member, eaeh of said eyes being set at un angle with respect to the length of the member of which it is formed, the cross bar of the first mentioned member being extended through said eyes and the sides thereof being designed, when the members are brought into superposed relation, to frictionally engage under the eyes to hold the members in operative position, and means for catching together ends of the members when in said superposed relation.
