Patented July 20, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOMER L. DIEHL AND CLAUDE A. WEYANDT, OF CLAYSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
UMBRELLA HANDLE.
Application filed February 8, 1924. Serial No. 691,392.
The invention relates to umbrella handles, particularly adapted for use by women, and has for its object to provide a device of this character having a chamber therein for the reception of a fan or any other article. Also to provide the vanity box hingedly connected to the end of the handle and forming a closure for the chamber of the handle, and at the same time an ornamental knob for the handle.
A further object is to provide the under side of the vanity box with an extension which extends into and closely tits in the outer end of the handle chamber, thereby bracing the box and relieving the strain on the hinges thereof.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of an umbrella showing the handle attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the handle.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the outer end of the handle showing the vanity box partially open, and also partially open in relation to the handle of the umbrella.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a conventional form of a womans umbrella and 2 the handle thereof. The handle 2 may be of any shape and configuration, and is provided with an elongated chamber 3, in which articles may be placed; however a fan l is preferably maintained therein where it may be easily obtained when desired for use. Although the device is being described in connection with an umbrella it is understood the same may be used in connection with a parasol.
Hingedly connected at 5 to the outer end of the handle 2 is the bottom section 6 of a vanity box, which vanity box forms an ornamental knob for the end of the handle, and at the same time is conveniently connected and positioned where it may be easily used, and held in front of the face with the mirror 7 carried by the hinged cover 8 thereof in position. Extending into the outs and of the chamber 3 from the bottom 6 of the vanity box is an extenslon 8 which extension fits tightly in the outer end of the chamber 3, and by engage ment with the walls of the chamber 3 prevent lateral movement of the vanity box as a whole, and consequently prevent a twisting strain on the hinges 5 connecting the vanity box tothe handle 2. One side of the vanity box is provided with a spring catch 9, which cooperates with a lug 10 carried by the handle 2 for holding the vanity box in closed position on the handle member 2 as shown in Figure 2. The vanity box and cover may be provided with any conventional form of catch means, and it will be understood that the catch means designated at 9 and 10 may be of any form desired for detachably holding the vanity box in closed position. The handle member 2 is provided with the usual wrist strap 11, adapted to be placed over the wrist or hand of the user of the umbrella in the usual manner.
From the above it will be seen that an umbrella handle is provided, in a chamber of which articles, for instance a fan may be stored, and a vanity box is used as a closure for the chamber, also the vanity box is provided with an extension which extends into the chamber of the handle for preventing lateral movement of the vanity box as a whole, and consequent strain on the hinges thereof. It will also be seen that the vanity box may be supported in front of the face with the cover 8 thereof open, using the handle as a support and handle for the vanity box.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is A handle having an elongated chamber therein, a vanity box body hingedly connected to the outer end of the handle and forming a closure for the chamber in the handle, said vanity box being provided with an integral downwardly struck extension extending into the outer end of the chamber and closely fitting therein when the box is in closed position and forming means for preventing lateral movement of the vanity box, and preventing strain on the hinged connection of the vanity box to the handle.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification.
